paperback. Zustand: Very Good. DETAILS: PAPERBACK, I find one short ink line in margin on page 22, otherwise looks very good, crisp copy with bright white paper. NORRIS, CHRISTOPHER. Derrida. Cambridge, Mass: Harvard University Press, 1987, later digital printing, 271pp., . "Jacques Derrida (born 1930) is undoubtedly the single most influential figure in current Anglo-American literary theory. Yet many scholars and students, not to mention general readers, would be hard put to give an account of Derrida's own writings. In this admirably clear and intelligent introduction, Christopher Norris demonstrates that Derrida's texts should be understood as belonging more to philosophy than to literature. Norris explains the significance of Derrida's writing on texts in the Western philosophical tradition, from Plato to Kant, Hegel, and Husserl, placing him squarely within that tradition. He also discusses some of the reasons for the massive institutional resistance that has so far prevented philosophers from engaging seriously with Derrida's work. This book will be welcomed by readers in search of an introduction to Derrida's work that neither underrates its difficulties nor invests his ideas with a kind of protective mystique." - CONTENTS: Introduction -- Philosophy/literature -- Derrida on Plato : writing as poison and cure -- Speech, presence, origins : from Hegel to Saussure -- Rousseau : writing as necessary evil -- Derrida and Kant : the Enlightenment tradition -- Letters home : Derrida, Austin and the Oxford Connection -- Nietzsche, Freud, Levinas : on the ethics of deconstruction. 9780674198241 ISBN 0674198247.

New York: Review Books, 2022, 1st printing number line ending with 1, 163pp., . Guston, Philip, 1913-1980 - Series: New York Review Books classics "The late paintings of Philip Guston have had a profound influence on painters today; only the altogether different work of Andy Warhol can be said to have had a comparable impact. As time has passed and Guston's star has risen, it has been forgotten how scandalous and crude these paintings, with their cartoonish imagery and curiously faltering application of paint, were initially deemed to be. The 1970 show at the Marlborough Gallery in which Guston, abandoning the delicate abstract expressionist style for which he was known, revealed his new style was critically savaged and even led to a rift between Guston and his best friend, the composer Morton Feldman, that was never fully mended. In the aftermath of this drubbing, Guston retreated to his studio in Woodstock, New York-in part to nurse his wounds, but more importantly, to go on painting exactly as he saw fit. Ross Feld, a young poet, novelist, and critic, was one of the few reviewers of Guston's show to write favorably about it. Guston responded with a grateful note-"I felt . . . As if we knew each other and had many discussions about painting and literature. In a word-I felt recognition"-and a new friendship was soon born. Feld became an inveterate visitor to the painter's studio-the two would sit up late at night hashing over what Guston had or hadn't achieved-and an inspiration to his work. Guston in Time, written not long before Feld's early death from cancer, is a portrait of Guston the man, of his wife Musa, a major figure not only in the artist's life but in his work, and a reckoning with his supremely individual achievement as an artist. Feld's slim and resonant book is a work of art in its own right". ISBN 9781681376615 8.00.

LIPSTADT, DEBORAH E. Antisemitism: here and now. New York: Schocken Books, 2019, stated First Edition, but with later printing number line ending in 3, xiii, 288pp., . "The award-winning author of The Eichmann Trial and Denial: Holocaust History on Trial gives us a penetrating and provocative analysis of the hate that will not die, focusing on its current, virulent incarnations on both the political right and left, and on what can be done about it. When newsreels depicting the depredations of the Holocaust were shown in movie theaters to a horrified American public immediately after World War II, it was believed that the antisemitism that was part of the fabric of American culture in the 1920s and 1930s was finally going to be laid to rest. In the ensuing decades, Gregory Peck received an Academy Award for playing a journalist who passed as a Jew to blow the lid off genteel Jew hatred, clauses restricting where Jews could live were declared illegal, the KKK was pretty much litigated out of existence, and Joe Lieberman came within five electoral votes of becoming America's first Jewish vice president. And then the unthinkable began to happen. Over the last decade, there has been a noticeable uptick in antisemitic rhetoric and incidents by left-wing groups targeting Jewish students and Jewish organizations on American college campuses. Jews in countries throughout Europe have been attacked by terrorists. And the re-emergence of the white nationalist movement in America, complete with Nazi slogans and imagery, has brought to mind the fascist displays of the 1930s. Where is all this hatred coming from? Is there any significant difference between left-wing and right-wing antisemitism? What role has the anti-Zionist movement played? And what can be done to combat this latest manifestation of an ancient hatred? In a series of letters to an imagined college student and imagined colleague, both of whom are perplexed by this resurgence, Deborah Lipstadt gives us her own superbly reasoned, brilliantly argued, and sure-to-be-controversial responses to these troubling questions" - CONTENTS: I. paperback. Zustand: Near Fine. PAPERBACK, attractive copy, near fine. HUME, ELLEN. Lost and found: coming of age in the Washington press corps. Ellen Hume, 2022, 519pp., . "This upbeat, funny and true story is about an American girl who found her superpowers by becoming Clark Kent. Determined to be a newspaper reporter, she discovered that the job wasn't open to girls. But she persisted, and succeeding beyond her wildest dreams, she covered some of the most tumultuous and colorful stories of her time, including the kidnapping of newspaper heiress Patty Hearst, terrorist Sara Jane Moore's attempt to kill President Ford, civil rights leader Jesse Jackson's historic presidential campaign, and the Reagan White House. Even though she hated politics, Hume's insistence on holding the powerful accountable took her to the top of the journalism heap in Washington, where as a reporter for the Los Angeles Times and Wall Street Journal, she figured out how the politicians manipulated the news, and vice-versa. This tell-all memoir is, remarkably, a love story as well as a rollercoaster ride through the American news media at the height of their power. No matter how bad things looked, Hume's motto was 'Don't let the past kill the future!' Hume's fairytale romance at Harvard ended with a devastating divorce, followed by a series of romantic misadventures. But at the age of 43 she embarked on the most impossible and rewarding assignment of her life: taking on a new husband and four children, all in one year." - Includes discussion of Petschek villa outside of Prague. And of Heda Kovaly. ISBN 9781667875750 29.40.
