A very nice copy in contemporary quarter morocco, gilt back (bookplate partially removed from front paste-down). First Edition of this description of the famous medieval landmark written by its most ambitious restorer Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and the historian and archaeologist Ferdinand de Guilhermy. Viollet-le-Duc, who was then just thirty years old, began work on the project together with Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Lassus, in 1844. The restoration of the building which had fallen into serious disrepair over time was to last twenty years. The present work retraces the history of construction and details every architectural and structural element. The Commission on Historical Monuments approved most of Viollet-le-Duc's plans including his proposal to recreate the original medieval spire and bell tower over the transept, which had been removed in 1786 because it was unstable in the wind. The new spire was taller, more ornate, and more strongly constructed; it was destroyed by fire in 2019 although the copper statues and ornaments were saved, having been removed for cleaning. Supervising a large team of sculptors, glass makers and other craftsmen, and working from drawings or engravings, Viollet-le-Duc remade or added decorations if he felt they were in the spirit of the original style. In total, the restoration of Notre Dame cost over 12million francs.…

Erste Aufl. 31 fadengeheftete, goldgeprägte, braune und schwarze Maroquin-Halbleder-Handeinbände mit verstärkten Ecken, goldgeprägter Rückenbeschriftung, marmoriertem Deckelpapier, marmorierten Vor- und Nachsatzpapieren, dreiseitigem Sprengschnitt und Lesebändchen. Mit Illustrationen im Text, einige davon im Lichtdruck (!), sowie zahlreichen Falttafeln. Die Einbände in unterschiedlicher Ausprägung berieben, Kopfschnitte alle altersgemäß mit deutlicher Nachdunkelung, nahezu alle Bände mit Bibliotheksstempel auf Vortitel- oder Titelblättern, das Papier teilweise nachgedunkelt, einige Seiten mit Knick oder kleinem Einriss oder Fleck, zahlreiche Transparentschutzpapiere der Falttafeln mit Knicken, vereinzelt dezent klaffende Bindungsstellen, der Vorderdeckel des 19. Bd. mit tieferer Druckstelle, das Lesebändchen des 26. Bandes lose im Buch, der Buchrücken des 27. Bandes wurde offenbar durch einen Buchbinder zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt fachgerecht restauriert, das Leder wurde komplett erneuert, der alte Rücken auf das neue Leder geklebt, Bd. 28 mit kleiner Fehlstelle des Vorderdeckelpapiers, insgesamt befinden sich die 31 Bände der fünften Serie des von Lavoisier mitbegründeten und bis 1815 unter dem Titel "Annales de Chimie" erschienenen bekannten französichen Fachorgans der Chemie in altersgemäß gutem, teilweise sehr gutem Erhaltungszustand. In dieser Vollständigkeit äusserst selten. Die Annales de Chimie et de Physique ist eine naturwissenschaftliche Zeitschrift, die in Paris im Jahre 1789 unter ihrem ursprünlichen dem Titel Annales de Chimie gegründet wurde. 4pp., 4to. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, with short closed tears at heads of both leaves. The recipient is not named, but the letter is from the Lynd family papers. Robert Lynd was in St Ives at the time of writing, and the letter begins: 'I'm so glad you are in such a nice place & that the children can join you there. They will love it. London gets so odious by the 15th of July. I came her e last week as I was very tired, & sick of the stuffy feeling of everything. The children enjoy it all thoroughly.' She describes her daughter Anne (for whom see the Oxford DNB) as 'a fat object now with a brick-red nose so is not so attractive to the casual observer, but to my anxious mind quite ideal from the health point of view.' She is sending Lynd's 'picture show card to [her husband] Rolfe', whose holiday plans she explains. The rest of the letter contains references to 'Raspberries & cream', 'Ivy Low' (Anglo-Russian author and translator Ivy Therese Low Litvinov), Wyndham Lewis (who 'came to tea with me after the party though, & I liked him. He is great fun.'), 'MIss Charlotte Mew' ('who, I believe, used to write for the Yellow Book, but no one took any notice of her'. She would like to show Lynd her 'part of Dorset [.] near Sturminster Newton. An old house with secret passages & a secret room in the chimney where a skeleto was found!' She announces that they are 'going to have an orgy at Rottingdean on Ssunday to celebrate [her other daughter] Marie's Eighth birthday!' She concludes with a reference to a novel, adding: 'Will you read Mary Crosbie's new one? Aren't vicarage teas awful!' In a postscript she writes: 'The Editor & Proprietor of the N[ew]. W[eekly]. do not like Ivy Low; but the latter said Mrs. Lynd [the writer Sylvia Lynd] had one of the nicest faces he had seen for ages! I don't know why Ivy Low seems to rouse so much antagonism. I think one can't forgive her for being such friends with W. L[loyd] George!'.…

The letter begins: 'Dear Lynd: I have been very ill and after two months in bed and an introduction to what Marley called "the thick, sweet smell of chloroform" I have been sent down here to get better - with the word of specialist and doctor that when I am well again I shall be better than I have been for a long time. This I write because I have often thought of writing to tell you how much I relish your papers. I have often wished that you would collect them - in a kind of Retrospective Reviews volume.' He discusses Omar Khayyam ('I remember once Andrew Lang was annoyed that there were people who thought Omar would serve as their classic as well as Homer.') before returning to Lynd's work. 'I cut out those papers of yours when I see them - and just now, when there seems such a dearth of work that shows any feeling for that big - and as I think immensely valuable - part of writing of any kind, when people are writing so earnestly, I wish you could make your work a criticism in the news.' After a reference to Hall Caine he continues: 'I daresay it will please you to know of one more who always reads an article with your name at the top of it'. He apologises for his letter: 'the news in it are very slapdashedly picked up! - but it will convey to you what I want it to convey - crawling back to this world from that other (which was not a bad one either I assure you; it was a very wonderful place when I was at my worst) and finding too little of what - of what I can't understand how people get along without. It is in your work. Thanks for it.' According to his entry in the Oxford DNB, 'In 1899, because of lung trouble, Niven travelled to British Columbia, Canada, where he regained his health and led an energetic outdoor life. On his return to Glasgow he began a career in journalism. He moved to England and his first novel, The Lost Cabin Mine, appeared in 1908.
