JEAN CHARLES DAVILLIER (Barón de Ruán, 1823-París, 1883) hijo de rica familia de industriales normandos que le permitió económicamente renunciar al mundo de los negocios y dedicarse por entero a viajar, desarrollando sus gustos artísticos y su afán coleccionista, sobre todo en el campo de las artes decorativas. Fue hispanista y gran conocedor de nuestra cultura. Había visitado nueve veces España antes de empezar en 1862 el viaje que sirvió como fuente principal de narración para este libro. Publicó también Historia de la cerámica hispanoárabe de reflejos metálicos; Historia de las lozas y porcelanas de Mostiers; El gabinete del duque de Aumont y los aficionados de su tiempo; Fortuny, su vida, su obra, su correspondencia. GUSTAVE DORÉ (Estrasburgo, 1832-París, 1883) fue uno de los más fecundos e influyentes dibujantes de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Sus exuberantes fantasías constituyeron una importante fuente de inspiración para los pintores románticos de la época.
