A la féministe Françoise de Lacoste (ca.1824-?), auteur d'un ouvrage Rénovation de la femme en 1869. Bel entête Manchester National Society for Women's Suffrage. Très intéressante lettre. « Dear Madam, I have much pleasure in receiving your letter this day & thank you for the friendly sentiments & sympathy therein expressed. Difference of language does make a little difficulty in communication but it does not hinder the closest mutual sympathy in all that concerns the amelioration of the condition of women. We have made a very good step in the winning of the municipal franchise, as you will gather from the fact that it has placed 7618 women on the list of citizens for the municipal borough of Manchester. From the Report of the proceedings of our Society during the past year which I send with this by book post — you will see more clearly how great the step that has been made, and its precise nature. All honour to Mr Jacob Bright, to whose courage, devotion and assiduity we owe this victory, a victory won not for English women only, but for women all over the world, for any great step made by one country in recognizing the rights of women citizens — must have its effect in others sooner or later. We shall better see the real effect of this step when the Bill, of which I order a copy, shall be laid before the House of Commons. Mr. Jacob Bright will introduce it quickly, the session opens early next month, and women all over the world should watch its progress with deep interest. We are organizing a systematic movement of petitions in support of it, and are looking forward with great anxiety but some hope to its progress. There is a better chance for obtaining the franchise for women in England than in any other country, our restricted suffrage prescribing certain conditions of property or occupation as the condition for a vote makes it that only about one-sixth of the voters would be women, were the disability of sex removed — But were the disability removed in England, it could not be longer maintained in the United States of America — & then would come the turn of the women of France! By book post, I send you some papers bearing on that part of the woman question to which my efforts are more specially directed — the securing political status and Parliamentary representation for women. We have made a great step in this direction by securing the concession of the Municipal franchise for women. By an Act which received the Queen's assent last Tuesday Aug. 2, 1869, women are made eligible to elect — and to be elected as councillors (or aldermen) in municipal boroughs. "An August Henneberger (1821-1866), Literarhistoriker und Gymnasiallehrer in Meiningen. - "Ich habe das Unglück gehabt in Mußestunden Verse zu machen und weiß welches Opfer ich Dir zumute, wenn ich Dich bitte einen kritischen Blick auf dieselben zu werfen und mir Deine Meinung zu sagen. Wozu hat man kritische Freunde [?]" - Robert Giseke war der Urenkel des Dichters Nikolaus Dietrich Giseke (1724-65). Seit 1855 redigierte er die Leipziger "Novellenzeitung" und später versch. Zeitungen in Dresden und Coburg. Seit 1863 lebte er in Berlin, wo ihn 1866 eine Gemütskrankheit befiel, die seine Überführung in die Heilanstalt zu Leubus erforderte. Von seinen Werken ist wohl nur noch der Zeitroman "Moderne Titanen" (1850) in Erinnerung geblieben, der zum Vergleich mit Gutzkows "Rittern vom Geist" und Spielhagens "Problematische Naturen" herausforderte.".…

Deaccessioned by the Bancroft Library, Berkeley, CA to Peter Howard of Serendipity Books.Hope is a Symbolist oil painting by the English painter George Frederic Watts, the first two versions of which were completed in 1886. he picture is one of a series of allegorical subjects which Watts intended for a decorative scheme known as the 'House of Life'. Traditionally the figure of Hope is identified by an anchor, but Watts was seeking a fresher, more original approach. He painted blind Hope seated on a globe and playing on a lyre which has all its strings broken except one. She bends her head to listen to the faint music, but her efforts appear forlorn; the overall atmosphere is one of sadness and desolation rather than hope. The picture's sense of melancholy is enhanced by the soft brushwork and the translucent mists that envelop the floating globe.…

This engraved view was removed (by a previous owner) from a copy of the April 4 1868 edition of the Illustrated London News, in which the panorama was one of the illustrations that accompanied a report on the Duke of Edinburgh's Tasmanian visit. The same original double-page contained another engraving (of identical dimensions), Regatta at Hobart Town, Tasmania, in honour of the visit of H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh. Both prints, on the same sheet, are held in the National Library of Australia (Rex Nan Kivell Collection, NK11760/55 and NK11760/56). Hobart Town, the capital of Tasmania appears to be after a two-part panorama of Hobart from Lime Kiln Hill taken by photographer Samuel Clifford, titled Hobart Town from the North West (National Archives, UK).…
