Märkischer Dichtergarten. - Christoph Friedrich Nicolai (1735-1811), Romanautor, Kritiker und bedeutender Verlagsbuchhändler der Berliner Aufklärung, leistete mit seinen Zeitschriften »Briefe, die neueste Literatur betreffend« und »Allgemeine Deutsche Bibliothek« einen wichtigen und streitbaren Beitrag zur Förderung der Aufklärungsphilosophie. Als »Literaturpapst« belehrte er namhafte Autoren oder schrieb gegen deren Erfolgsbücher. Friedrich Schlegels Roman »Lucinde«, der die Freuden der fleischlichen Liebe feierte, weckte Nicolais Tugendhaftigkeit, er schrieb die »Vertrauten Briefe von Adelheid B. an ihre Freundin Julie S.«, um vor allen Gefahren des »Vergnügens« zu warnen. Reizvoll an diesem Zeitroman ist sein Ver- und Enthüllungsspiel. Personen und Orte werden vom Verfasser maskiert, aber nicht allzu sehr. An völliger Unkenntlichmachung ist ihm nicht gelegen. Die Larve, die er den Sündern mit der einen Hand vors Gesicht hält, lüftet er mit der andern (in den Fußnoten) wieder. Daß die Stadt mit den guten (den aufgeklärten) und den schlechten (den romantischen) Zirkeln nur Berlin sein kann, ist klar; der Haß auf die Universitäten (Berlin bekam erst elf Jahre später eine) macht den Autodidakten Nicolai kenntlich; und aus der weiblichen Verkleidung der Adelheid B. spricht unverhohlen ein alter Mann. Der besondere Reiz, den dieser Roman auch heute noch besitzt, liegt in der Umkehrung seiner ursprünglichen Absicht. Sollten die »Vertrauten Briefe« damals vor Irrwegen der Jugend warnen, so liest man sie heute als Warnung vor den Vorurteilen des Alters. -- Günter de Bruyn hat außer diesem amüsanten Roman für den »Märkischen Dichtergarten« Nicolais »Werther«-Parodie, zeitgenössische Rezensionen und Schmähungen ausgewählt. Der Leser erhält einen Einblick in literarische Gefechte um 1800 und kann mit Vergnügen die verschiedenen Gangarten parodistischer Anlässe und Wirkungen kennenlernen.
