In den Warenkorb: and to demonstrate the practicability of effecting an extensive emigration of the industrious classes from the mother country to that colony. Sydney : Printed by Stephens and Stokes, 1831. Octavo, old marbled wrappers, pp 27; first 2 leaves with minor creasing flaws, light foxing, pale water stain to top edges; a good copy. A scarce pamphlet in which Lang puts forward his ambitious plan for the establishment of the Australian College in Sydney, to be based on the principles of the Scottish school system. The response was positive and the College was opened in 1831, the year the pamphlet was published. The College was successful for a little over two decades until its closure in 1854. Lang includes in the pamphlet a list of items that have been donated for the use of pupils of the College, among them the complete works of Bentham - a gift of the famous philosopher and social reformer himself. There is also an early mention of Lang's involvement in a scheme for emigration to Australia.

In den Warenkorb[Edinburgh? : J.D. Lang?, c.1847]. Foolscap folio, [4] pp, original horizontal folds, trimmed closely along the fore-edge margin, but a good, clean copy of a rare document. Ferguson, 4566. Lang's proposal for the formation of an Edinburgh- or Glasgow-based company which would organise large-scale emigration of Protestants, particularly from the Scottish Highlands and western islands, to the newly opened-up lands of Port Phillip, New South Wales. "The Territory of Phillipsland, hitherto improperly designated Port Phillip, constitutes one of the most splendid provinces of the British Empire.". The proposal includes an outline of Lang's scheme for the construction of a railway line from Geelong to the Glenelg River, to serve the substantial immigrant population that would be settled in the Western District. The prospectus was published in the same year as Lang's book, Phillipsland; Or the country hitherto designated Port Phillip: Its present condition and prospects, as a highly eligible field for emigration(Edinburgh : Constable, 1847). Copies are recorded in only four Australian collections (State Library of Victoria; Deakin University Library; National Library of Australia, State Library of New South Wales). Held in the National Library of Scotland.
