Contemporary brown full calf with raised bands and gilt titles to black label, and further gilt decoration to spine. All edges and endpapers marbled. Two separate black ink ownership inscriptions to flyleaf. A 2cm diameter damp patch to flyleaf and frontispiece, causing a small hole to the flyleaf. 4to (203 x 255 mm). 1 p. A letter from the satirical poet to a government ministry on a theme of evergreen concern to artists everywhere: expenses. Barthélemy says he encloses a bill for the printing of his pamphlet, coming to 120 Francs 30 centimes, requesting it to be forwarded to the minister for reimbursement: "J'ai l'honneur de vous transmettre la note des frais d'impression pour ma brochure, monta à la somme de 120 fr. 30 cm. Ayez l'extrême obligeance de voulais bien en dire un mot à M. Le Ministre, qui donnera ses ordres pour le payement de cette facture [.]". - A frequent collaborator of the poet, dramaturge and novelist Joseph Méry (1797-1866), Barthélemy's works often caused scandal and official displeasure, leading to his imprisonment in 1829 until the revolution of 1830. After this, his praise of Louis-Philippe earned him a pension, which was suspended in 1832 following his publication of several satirical verses attacking the government. Following the restitution of his pension, he refrained from publishing satire until 1844, although his later works failed at recapturing his previous success. - Although undated, this letter requesting reimbursement from a ministry must have been written during a period after 1830 when he enjoyed official support. A peek into the relationship between art and government in nineteenth-century France. - Paper somewhat brittle and creased, light browning and foxing, minor marginal tears. Writing clear and clean.…

En 1530, il publia à Vérone un poème célèbre sur la syphilis (Syphilis, sive morbi gallici, libri tres, ad Petrum Bembum). Du nom de cette maladie est tiré ce poème. Catalogue de l'éditeur in fine. Die Notizen, die mir mit den frühren Schreiben vom 21. v.W. zugegangen sind, konnte ich für die Niederrh. Mus. Zeitung nicht mehr verwenden, da ich bereits das Wichtigste daraus aus der Süddeutschen M.Z. in Nr. 27 augenommen hatte []" - Geboren wurde er als Sohn eines Cellisten aus einer traditionsreichen Musikerfamilie. So bekam er seine erste musikalische Erziehung vom Vater.Ab 1812 studierte Bischoff in Berlin Philologie. Aber bereits 1813 ging er zum Preußischen Kavallerie-Regiment und nahm an der Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig teil. 1814 nahm er seine Studien in Berlin wieder auf und beendete sie 1817.Im Frühjahr 1818 übersiedelte er in die Schweiz, wo er als Pädagoge Anstellung fand. Nach seiner Rückkehr wurde er 1821 Gymnasiallehrer in Berlin und 1823 Direktor am Gymnasium in Wesel, wo Konrad Duden bei ihm sein Abitur ablegte.Bischoff nahm in Wesel rege am Musikleben teil und gründete einen Gesang- und Orchesterverein. Wegen seiner liberalen Gesinnung und seines Verhaltens während der 1848er Revolution musste er seinen Abschied nehmen und zog 1849 nach Bonn. Dort gründete er die in Köln erscheinende»Rheinische Musikzeitung«(185059, später»Niederrheinische Musikzeitung«), deren erklärtes Ziel es war, die Traditionen der klassischen Kunst gegen die Zumutungen der Zeitgenossen zu verteidigen. 1850 gründete er gemeinsam mit anderen die Musikgesellschaft»Beethoven Verein«. Bereits kurze Zeit später gab dieser Verein, bestehend aus Fachmusikern und Dilettanten, Abonnementskonzerte.Die letzten Jahre verbrachte Bischoff in Köln, wo er 1867 einem Schlaganfall erlag.Bischoff war einer der Hauptkämpfer gegen die neudeutsche" Wagner-Richtung und wurde von Wagner (in seiner Schrift Das Judenthum in der Musik) zu Unrecht bezichtigt, den Begriff Zukunftsmusik" geprägt zu haben.…

Ich glaube, die Sache wird sich machen: ich habe im scenischen Entwurf 3 Akte fertig und für den 4ten (und letzten) auch schon das Nöthige in petto.
