The river Colne, which passes through Colchester, encompasses it on the north and east, and served as a special means of defence in time of war. There are three bridges over it, and it is navigable within three miles of the town for ships of large burthen: up to that part called the Hythe: it is navigable for hoys and small craft close to the houses.' Crown 8vo (194 x 120mm): [4],viii,377,[1],]pp, with 10 steel-engraved plates (including frontispiece and vignette title page dated 1836) by George Cruikshank. Complete with catalogue of Macrone's publications, dated December, 1836. Page vi is misnumbered "viii;" list of illustrations gives "Vauxhall Gardens by Day" twice in error and omits final plate, "Mr. Minns and his Cousin." All required first edition points present, per Smith, who notes: "it does not appear possible to associate definitely early or late copies totally with states of the spine, endpapers (pale yellow or blue), location of the plates and whether or not they contain the volume number, the absence or presence of the list of illustrations, and internal flaws." Publisher's original moderate red morocco-grain cloth, covers bordered and decorated in blind with wreath centerpieces, black pigmented panels on spine lettered in gilt, yellow coated end papers. Blind-embossed in tiny type centered at foot of front cover: "Remnant & Edmonds, London" (see Ramsden, p. 121 and Jamieson, p. 11.) Housed in made-to-order folding box. Excellent original cloth (barely any lightening), plates moderately foxed (but mostly marginally so), pages generally clean, bright, and virtually free of foxing. Original spines very expertly relaid, retaining "dark pigments" for both lettering pieces. The fragile cloth makes this second series devilishly difficult to obtain in such collectible condition. In February 1836, John Macrone published Sketches by Boz, illustrative of Every-day Life and Every-day People, which came to be known as the "first series." This "second series" appeared in December. Sadleir ranked both series on his list of Dickens raities (although in our experience, the second series is now the more elusive.) "Dickens originally published most of the pieces collected under Sketches in a wide variety of newspapers and periodicals between December 1833 and December 1836, at the beginning struggling just to appear in print. . . . The appearance of 'Boz' as Dickens's pen-name (a corruption of a family nickname Moses, via Dickens's younger brother's mispronunciation) in one of these seven pieces, "The Boarding House", marked to a certain degree the young writer coming into his own. . . . Bischofs Hauptwerk ist das "Lehrbuch der chemischen und physikalischen Geologie" (Bonn 184754, 2 Bde.; 2. Aufl. 186366, 3 Bde.; Supplement 1871). First edition, first issue, with "wine" for "vine" in the fifth stanza, centered page numbers, and trees in the seventh plate and hills in the ninth plate unshaded. The text has been long attributed to Thackeray; however Benoit Forgeot suggests that it was Dickens alone who wrote this verse adaptation of the Ballad, as well as the tongue-in-cheek introduction and notes. On "hearing Cruikshank mournfully intone the words of the Turk's daughter to the imprisoned LordDickens offered to polish it into an even more solemn absurdity. He told Cruikshank to ask his sister Fanny to take down the music and 'to be sure to mark the shades and the expression.' And although he kept his part in The Loving Ballad secret, he not only wrote a burlesque introduction and notes, but altered lines and substituted a new last verse" (Johnson, p. 260). George Cruikshank was a British caricaturist and book illustrator who was praised as the "modern Hogarth" during his lifetime. In addition to the present volume, Cruikshank illustrated several other Dickens works, including Sketches by Boz, The Mudfog Papers, and Oliver Twist. Cohn 243. Yale/Gimbel B84.". Er bittet um Entschuldigung für seine späte Antwort auf dessen Gratulation zum 50. Jubiläum seiner Promotion. "[?] Die Zahl der eingekommenen Schreiben war nämlich ansehnlich und ich hielt es für nöthig, den wissenschaftlichen Corporationen zuerst zu danken, was natürlich nicht in kurzen Briefen geschehen konnte. Da andere Geschäfte während dessen fortliefen, so waren die Osterferien zu Ende, ehe alle Schreiben jener Art abgeschickt waren, und es begann ein Semester, in dem ich dergestalt gedrängt war, daß ich öfters eine Reihe von Wochen hindurch keinen Jubil.-Brief schreiben konnte. [?] Diese gütige Gesinnung vieler hochgeachteter Männer bildet eine Lebenserrungenschaft, über die ich mich in vollem Maaße freuen kann [?]" Nach Berichten über Reisen schreibt er fortfahrend über Johann Caspar "Bluntschli hat bis jetzt das Privatrecht bei Seite gelassen, um ganz in die Fußstapfen seines Vorgängers zu treten. Er wird gerne gehört. Er hat auch dieß mit [Robert von] Mohl gemein, daß er nicht gerne bloß lehren, sondern auch thätig nach außen wirken will, wobei es denn freilich nicht so friedlich hergeht, wie im Kathederleben, und der Parteiführer auf das Empfangen und Austheilen von Püffen gefaßt sein muß. Die staatlichen Angelegenheiten sind wieder recht verworren und unerquicklich. Man merkt es den Würzburgern und Wienern an, daß sie den Zwiespalt in Berlin und die daraus entstehende Schwäche mit geheimer Freude betrachten und sich deßhalb mehr herausnehmen. Möchte doch der redliche und wohlgesinnte König dieß einsehen!" Gegen Ende des ausführlichen Briefes berichtet er von den Heidelberger Kollegen Karl Bernhard Stark, Carl Joseph Anton Mittermaier sowie von dem wie Rau mehrfachen Dekan der jur. Fakultät, Conrad Franz Roßhirt, welcher auch kürzlich sein Jubiläum begehen konnte, und läßt Grüße an den Breslauer Kollegen Carl Julius Bergius ausrichten. Rau wurde 1822 als o. Professor der Staatswissenschaften an die Phil. Fakultät der Universität Heidelberg berufen; dieses Amt übte er bis zu seinem Tode aus. Politisch engagierte er sich im badischen Landtag und gehörte 1848 dem Frankfurter Vorparlament an. ".
