Summary: Pierre-Joseph Redoute (1759-1840) is the best known botanical artist of any era. Described as both the "Rembrandt" and the "Raphael" of flowers by 19th-century writers, Redoute brought the tradition of botanical painting to its apogee. Born in the Belgian Ardennes, he studied the work of earlier Flemish and Dutch floral artists, and when in Paris studied botany. He was given special access to the gardens of Versailles by Marie Antoinette and to those of Malmaison by the Empress Josephine. This text accompanies the first ever exhibition of Redoute's work in the USA held in July, 2002 at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut. 4 Kg.

Im Jardin du Roi ging er seinen botanischen Studien nach, welche bald die Aufmerksamkeit von Gerard van Spaendonck und Charles Louis L'Héritier de Brutelle weckten. Zu seinen Förderern zählten u.a. Königin Marie Antoinette und Kaiserin Joséphine. Redouté wurde wegen seiner außergewöhnlichen Begabung für botanische Darstellungen als der "Rafael der Blumen" apostrophiert. Die mehrbändigen Rosen- und Lilienbücher 'Les roses' und 'Les liliacées' gelten als sein Hauptwerk. // Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759 St. Hubert / Belgium - 1840 Paris) was a famous French flower painter and watercolorist. In 1782 he came to Paris to work as a decorator and stage painter. In the Jardin du Roi he pursued his botanical studies, which soon caught the attention of Gerard van Spaendonck and Charles Louis L'Héritier de Brutelle. The present item is not in the best of condition: it is aged and creased (including dog-eared corner on which the signature 'Camden' is written), with contemporary repair to two long tears by the laying down on the blank reverse of strips from a contemporary manuscript. Docketed on the otherwise…blank second leaf: '25th July 1824 / Marquis Camden'. Writing from the town house of the Marquis of Londonderry to an unnamed recipient, regarding William Pitt the Younger's country house: 'You were so kind, when I had the pleasure of meeting you, at Lord Londonderry, to offer to send me a sketch which had been made, of Holwood[.] I was much obliged to you for the Intention, you expressed & I beg to remind you of it, as it may have escaped your Recollection. I beg you to believe me / Yours most sincerely / Camden'.
