Probably the best North Wales topographical plate book In contemporary worn half calf, over worn marbled boards, corners & edges a little bumped & worn. Spine, raised bands, gilt tooling, titles in gilt to red calf label, cracked along upper joint. Internally, title, dedication & preface leaves followed by thirty hand coloured plates each with a leaf of descriptive text (printed both sides and in 2 columns), not paginated, plates dated 1815 or 1816, & some watermarked Whatman 1811/1814/1817, bookplate to fpd (WB Dukes), occasional spot mainly to blanks, upper hinge going held by ties Drawn by T. Compton. Engraved by I. Baily, Daniel Havell, or T. Cartwright. A lovely example, with clean plates, depicting wonderful views. (oblong, 329*241 mm). (Tooley 155. Bobins 632. The SECOND edition in contemporary full green morocco (by J. Wright), elaborate gilt tooling, gilt armorial image to upper board. Spine, rubbed, raised bands, attractive gilt tooling & titles. Internally, coloured frontis, [4], followed by 39 pls (coloured & with guards), each with a leaf of descriptive text, not paginated, plates dated 1816-1821, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, a.e.g. Each plate displays bright crisp colour with no foxing. A beautiful book with only minor rubbing to edges, armorial bookplate to fpd (Frederick Cass). The 1st edition had only 20 plates whilst this, the 2nd has 39, and has a new title and plates. Describing the scenery and general characters of that romantic country, embellished with a series of highly finished coloured views engraved from original drawings by Turner, Compton, Robson, Gandy, Nicholson, Girtin, De Wint, Fielding and Proust., An excellent Example. Internally, not paginated, frontis, [2] ff, B-L2, 39 pls (coloured & numbered), with 40 leaves of descriptive text, text leaves watermarked J Whatman 1820. Plates dated 1818 & 20, watermarked 1820 except for the frontis which is dated 1820 but watermarked 1823, armorial bookplate to fpd (Frances M Myers). (415*267 mm or 16 5/16*10 1/2 inches). Klassensteuer-Hofkommission in der Steyermark betr. einer Renumeration von 100fl. für das vergangene wie für das kommende Jahr in Anbetracht des "mit gleichem Eifer" stets tätigen Albert Keiter. - Ugarte wurde 1787 Gubernator, Landeshauptmann und Appellationspräsident von Mähren und Schlesien, erwarb sich über Jahre hinweg ungezählte Verdienste und wurde derentwegen von Leopold II. mit der Würde eines wirklichen Geheimen Rates bedacht. Später bekleidete er das Amt des Präsidenten der k.k. Studienhofkommission, der k.k. Hofkammer, der Ministerialbanco-Hofdeputation sowie der Finanz- und Commerzhofstelle und der k.k. Hofkammer in Münz- und Bergwesen. "Zu dieser Stelle berief ihn Kaiser Franz i. J. 1813, nachdem er ihn vorher durch die Ernennung zum Staats- und Conferenzminister als dauernden Beirath an seine Seite berufen hatte" (ADB XXXIX, 138). Vier Tage vor seinem Ableben wurde ihm der Orden des goldenen Vließes verliehen. - Mit Siegelresten und 6-Kreuzer-Gebührenstempel.

12mo, 3 pp. Bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged and creased paper. Wood begins by recalling 'the savage bigotry and infuriate hostility of the Manchestr. Tories at the time you mention towards the liberals'. He does not think an attempt was made to put the Oath of Allegiance to those on the recipient's list. 'The lives of 6-8 men of high Character and standing in the Town were placed in jeopardy by the perjury of two Villains and they were tried at Lancaster for either Treason or Sedition. I think for the former. One of the Wretches ran away and did not appear at the Trial (I was present), the other (named Dunn) on giving his testimony in Court was convicted of Perjury and ordered into custody immedy. by the Judge, & afterwards imprisoned for 2 years.' Those accused by Dunn were 'triumphantly acquitted'. Wood names the 'Revd: Jno. Griffiths (a Fellow of the Old Church)' as 'a leading instigator of the proceedings' against them. Wood concludes by offering 'any information' he can give 'relating to the diabolical transactions of that Period'. In his article 'Luddism and politics in northern counties' (1979), John Dinwiddy describes Wood as a 'wealthy Unitarian' and 'a member of a 'group of middle-class reformers'. The background of the trial is given in Walker's entry in the Oxford DNB: 'On 11 December 1792 [.] Walker's house on South Parade and the offices of the Manchester Herald were besieged by a "church and king" mob. [.] Manchester authorities and loyalists had bribed an Irish weaver and local radical named Thomas Dunn to give false evidence against Walker and, despite failing to indict him of high treason, he and nine other Manchester reformers were charged with conspiring to overthrow the king, constitution, and government. Walker, who employed the defence of Thomas Erskine and Felix Vaughan, was tried at Lancaster assizes on 2 April 1794, but he was acquitted largely on account of Dunn's perjury.'.
