Throughout his life, he contributed assiduously to scientific periodicals through notes, problems, criticism, and commentary. He wrote textbooks for his pupils in Newcastle and the cadets at Woolwich; edited a great many almanacs, including the Ladies' Diary (1773-1818); and compiled several volumes of mathematical tables." â" DSB. Tracts include "The Principles of Bridges," "Queries concerning London-bridge, proposed in the year 1746, by the Magistrates of the City," "On the Common Sections of the Sphere and Cone," "Determination of the Air's Resistance to Bodies in motion, as determined by the Whirling Machine," "On the Theory and Practice of Gunnery, as dependent on the Resistance of the Air," "History of Algebra in all Nations," "Calculations to ascertain the Density of the Earth." PROVENANCE: Robert Lloyd Tilghman [Jr.], was born to a very wealthy family who owned Hope House, a mansion in Talbot County, Maryland, near Easton, Md. In den WarenkorbA. List of plates in 'Vol.Ist', Holograph MS., one page, 4to, small stain, sl.chipped, text complete, addressed to a Richard Murphy of Derby on verso, text columnising No. of Plate, Title/subject, page number; B. List of plates in 'Vol.2nd', Holograph MS., 2pp. fol., bifolium, folded, aged but good condition, columns as List Vol.I. Note: a. This Index doesn't seem to have been published (the text on Google Books and the British Library copy have no such index); b. I haven't checked all the plates, but one reveals the engraver of the plates as 'Multow & Russell' (Plate XXXI); c. From the Preface: ".In short, the alterations, additions and other improvements are so numerous, and so large, as entitle the present edition to be considered almost as an entire new work"; d. This index doesn't necessarily reflect the placement of Plates on the page they record (unless the BL in re-binding created disorder). For example "37. Ptolomaic System, . [p.]478" is numbered xxxvi (36)in print, and is opposite p.491. SEE IMAGE.
