[Bangorian Controversy] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (20 x 13cm), pp.[2] xvi; 342 [4]. With some woodcut head pieces and other vignettes to preliminaries. Very fine contemporary polished, panelled and speckled calf, with raised bands and gilt titles to spine. All edges speckled red. Repairs to hinges, and a blank label covering a bookplate or ownership on the front pastedown. Toning to edges, and a little light spotting to endpapers, otherwise a crisp, clean example. Boards bumped to corners; spine toned, rubbed and cracked, with split joints. Head cap pulled away. A fine example of eighteenth-century binding, the boards appearing particularly fresh. Very good. A later salvo in the Bangorian Controversy, which began with a sermon preached by Hoadly in March 1717 denying the authority of any clergy to pronounce excommunication, and by extension the authority of any established Church, quoting John 18:36, "My kingdom is not of this world." A war of pamphlets immediately commenced, and though Hoadly was quickly condemned by a Convocation of the Church of England, King George I dismissed the report before any sanctions could be imposed.
