Su producción en verso fue largo tiempo considerada menor con respecto a sus obras escultóricas y pictóricas, tras su publicación por un sobrino, con torpes enmiendas, en 1623. Fue en 1863, al ser publicadas las Rime por el erudito Cesare Guasti en edición completa, conforme a los manuscritos del artista, cuando se estableció la cronología de los poemas (sonetos, madrigales, canciones y fragmentos) y pudieron apreciarse la singularidad y el desarrollo de la obra. A partir de este importante hito editorial se inauguran los estudios de la poesía buonarrotiana, cuya originalidad e importancia en el contexto estético de su tiempo ha sido destacada por grandes poetas, escritores y críticos literarios del mundo occidental contemporáneo.
