Shakespeare, William, 1564-1616. The tragedy of Othello, the moor of Venice. Edited by Barbara A. Mowat and Paul Werstine. 2017, An Updated Edition, 350pp., PAPERBACK, cover price $9.95, very good. In Venice, at the start of Othello, the soldier Iago announces his hatred for his commander, Othello, a Moor. Othello has promoted Cassio, not Iago, to be his lieutenant. Iago crudely informs Brabantio, Desdemona's father, that Othello and Desdemona have eloped. Before the Venetian Senate, Brabantio accuses Othello of bewitching Desdemona. The Senators wish to send Othello to Cyprus, which is under threat from Turkey. They bring Desdemona before them. She tells of her love for Othello, and the marriage stands. The Senate agrees to let her join Othello in Cyprus. In Cyprus, Iago continues to plot against Othello and Cassio. He lures Cassio into a drunken fight, for which Cassio loses his new rank; Cassio, at Iago's urging, then begs Desdemona to intervene. Iago uses this and other ploys--misinterpreted conversations, insinuations, and a lost handkerchief--to convince Othello that Desdemona and Cassio are lovers. Othello goes mad with jealousy and later smothers Desdemona on their marriage bed, only to learn of Iago's treachery. He then kills himself. ISBN 9781501146299.

sewn PAPERBACK, very good - Italian and English on facing pages. BUONARROTI, MICHELANGELO. The poems / Michelangelo. Edited and translated by Christopher Ryan. London: J.M. Dent, 1996, xxviii, 354pp., . "Michelangelo Buonarroti, sculptor, painter and architect, is among the few people recognized as a genius in their own time. He is also the first major artist in the Western tradition to have left a significant body of poetry." "Written mainly in the form of sonnets, madrigals and quatrains, the poems encompass love, beauty, moral endeavour, the quest for salvation, and the ravages of death and time. They reveal a highly vulnerable personality, dependent for inspiration on the beautiful young nobleman Tommaso Cavalieri, on the gifted Vittoria Colonna, and, above all, on a sense of being saved by Christ from what Michelangelo regarded as his own moral turpitude and from eternal damnation. The personality of Michelangelo comes to be known best through his poetry, for his stature as an artist has tended to obscure the complexity of his character. His artistic achievements were so awesome that even his contemporaries called him divine; his poems help us recover the man." "The Poems is the only modern English prose translation of the entire corpus of Michelangelo's poetry - some 302 poems and forty-one fragments - capturing the original in vigorous modern English, with the Italian text and English translation on facing pages.". 9780460878784 ISBN 0460878786.
