Written in the eighth century, it was allegedly a fourth-century document by which the Emperor Constatine the Great gave extensive privileges and property to Pope Sylvester I. This document was accepted as genuine for seven centuries and was cited by at least ten popes in contentions for the recognition of papal control. Lorenzo Valla's 1440 treatise, circulated in manuscript, established the Donation of Constatine was forged, and made him a pioneer of modern historical criticism. Because of church opposition the essay was not formally published in print until Ulrich von Hutten's edition of 1517. This reprint of the 1922 edition of Valla's treatise and presents the Latin text and English translation of it and the forged donation document on facing pages. Text and Translation into English. Empleado de la Corona desde la toma de Granada, Mártir de Anglería tomó por costumbre ir escribiendo cartas a sus amistades íntimas dando noticia de las novedades que se daban en la Corte. Muchas de ellas, por cierto, enviadas al Gran Tendilla, el mencionado López de Mendoza, quien, por sus méritos en la toma de Granada, había sido nombrado su Virrey ¡con carácter hereditario!, tropezón en el que no reincidirían los monarcas al nombrar virreyes para el gobierno de los territorios de las Américas. En todo caso, la costumbre de Mártir de Anglería de cotillearles a sus amistades lo que iba sucediendo en los salones reales se volvió mundialmente relevante cuando comenzó a darles las noticias de lo que Colón contaba que se había encontrado al regresar del viaje iniciado desde la península ibérica hacia el Oeste. Y del segundo, y del tercero, y de lo que en los años siguientes fueron contando quienes, como él, fueron embarcándose en la misma dirección a encontrarse con las tierras que allí había. Pero algunos de sus corresponsales comenzaron a desvelar lo que les contaba, incluyéndolo en impresos que no hacían sospechar la importancia del contenido, culminando la traición al cotilla cuando en 1511, mientras Mártir se encontraba en Egipto, aparecieron, impresos en Sevilla, los primeros nueve libros de la primera de las décadas de la que con el tiempo sería conocida como 'Decadas de novo orbe'. El propio Mártir de Anglería no se decidió a publicar a propósito sus décadas hasta 1516, cuando reunió las tres primeras para que las imprimiese Arnao Guillén de Brocar en Alcalá. Y las ocho décadas que acabaron componiendo el conjunto, no vieron la luz hasta que, en 1530, después de muerto el autor, Miguel de Eguía las imprimió en Alcalá de Henares. Sin embargo, la edición de 1516 de las tres primeras décadas había provocado un terremoto en Europa. Las noticias de que había tierras habitadas desconocidas yendo desde Europa hacia el oeste y de cómo eran sus habitantes, sus recursos y sus animales, provocó que aquella edición se reprodujese y tradujese en países y lenguas, ediciones que a su vez siguieron reproduciéndose a lo largo del siglo, sin tener en cuenta los enormes añadidos de la edición de Alcalá de 1530. Así sucede también en esta edición, en la que Gerwin Calenius imprimió las cuatro primeras décadas: las tres primeras de la edición de Alcalá, 1516, y la cuarta, 'De insulis, nuper inventis, & de moribus incolarum earundem liber', que se había publicado por primera vez en Basilea en 1521. Pero en esta edición Calenius decidió añadir, además, otra obra de Anglería, los Legationis Babylonicae libri tres, los que había enviado como.

A unique survival in the hand of Peter Martyr d'Anghiera (1457-1526), the first European historian of the New World. Peter Martyr was an Italian swept up in the milieu of the Spanish court, a tutor to… princes, and a personal friend of the likes of Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan, and Amerigo Vespucci. It was Martyr who wrote the first accounts of Central and South America in a series of letters and reports, which were subsequently published from 1511 to 1530 in compilations referred to as his "Decades". Much of what is known about the looks, personality, and minds of the early explorers come from Martyr's letters, which sometimes included lively gossip. He was the first to describe contact between Europeans and Native Americans, and provided vital early insight into Pre-Columbian American civilizations; he was the first to understand the importance of the Gulf Stream, and the first European to reference India rubber. - This receipt of funds is written in Peter Martyr's own hand ("mia propria mano") while he was spending time back in Milan, attached to the Sforza family. It acknowledges the receipt of a sum of twelve imperial livres linked to the late Baptista Sfondrato, a member of the powerful Sfondrato family and another high connection of Peter Martyr's. - Between the Sforzas and the Sfondratos, already Martyr was moving in powerful circles, and at the court of Spain he witnessed the earliest years of the Age of Exploration and one of the greatest sea-changes in human history. His friendships with the great explorers of the age granted Martyr access to documents and personal interviews few others could reach, swiftly establishing him as the foremost historian of the Americas in Europe. - When this note was sold at Goodspeed's Book Shop in the 1970s, then-director Gordon Banks referred to it as "probably the most unusual item and perhaps the rarest that we have listed in several years." A unique text in Martyr's own hand, it helps sketch the complex web of political and personal alliances through which Martyr navigated his career. No handwritten notes by Martyr or any of his conquistador colleagues Columbus, Magellan, Vespucci can be traced on the market; as stated by Goodspeed fifty years ago, the present autograph stands alone. - Tipped onto backing paper, lightly creased; quite well preserved. - 1) Listed in a fragmentary auction record, currently unidentified, bought by - 2) Goodspeed's Book Shop, 1976, sold to - 3) The private collection of Dr. John K. L`opera è un poema pastorale che alterna versi a prosa, pubblicato nel 1504 a Napoli,ebbe grande impatto in tutta la letteratura fino a metà delXVII sec. Il testo influenzò soprattutto l`immaginario letterario occidentalein unaprima interpretazione dell`Arcadia come di un tempo e spazio \"idialliaco e bucolico\". Esemplare in buone condizioni e dalla fresca inchiostratura; margini superiori corti alla prima parte, con perdita di qualche letterina all`intestazione di poche pagine.

Binding; superbly preserved Flemish panel-stamped binding with on both covers twice the ''Deus Dedit'' panel , two rows of three animals, separated by a frieze very much like OP.3, lozenges with flowers in the centers (Plate XV in Fogelmark). For the panel, see article by Luc Indestege in Gutenberg Jahrbuch 1958, p. 279, panel 22. Lower end of upper joint expertly restored (over 6 cm), ties missing, lower margin of first five leaves restored with no loss of text, some marginal waterstains at lower margin. The binding is exceptionally well preserved and the leather still very good; the impressions of the panels are very sharp and don't show traces of wear. Kept in a modern halfleather box.
