Boards have some edge wear, with slight bumping and fraying to corners, while spine ends are moderately crushed and rubbed. Slightly scratched, rubbed and marked overall. Pale water stains to rear. Boards are bowed and bent.

Reprint (the first edition was in 1936). 255pp. We believe that 'Operator 1384' was John Henry Harvey, an Englishman in the French Foreign Legion who, along with Bennett Doty (an American) and two Germans, deserted the Legion in Syria in 1926. He was captured but eventually allowed to leave the Foreign Legion after enough diplomatic and political pressure was made to bear on the French Army. He writes in his preface to this story of L'Espionage Central, the Secret Service of the French Foreign Legion, that the names in the book are pseudonyms; but he has adhered strictly to facts, and has related no incident which did not actually occur and in which he did not personally take part. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear to the boards and slight fading along the top 1/2" of the front board. The spine is more noticeably faded and the spine ends are lightly bumped. The contents are tight and clean with browning to the free endpapers. There is no inscription.

Signed "With best wishes yours truly / Westpfahl". Folded once for mailing. Near fine. "In your last letter you mentioned an English scientist working about a book on English recluses, hermits etc. You told me your intention to contribute to this work. I am working upon text editions of the recluse Dorothea von Montau. / Is there anything I could do for you?" Saint Dorothea of Montau [1347-1394], the subject of Westpfahl"s book, was a German visionary and recluse who was canonized in 1976.

This is his account of his experiences in Morocco , Syria and Lebanon. The book is bound in the original orange-red cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling on the boards. The spine ends are bumped and the spine is faded. There is some patchy damp fading on the fore edge of the rear board and around the corners of the front board. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.
