Published by Darton in 1819, this is the First Edition of this scarce children's book from Mary Pilkington (1761-1839) bound in the original publishers quarter red leather binding, 14cm tall approx., illustrated with a frontispiece and a further two engraved plates. 188 pages plus a publishers advert page, Binding is rubbed and worn with loss to leather on the spine, old ownership inscription and minor remains of old booksellers label above, heavy foxing to a few pages, though the greater part of the contents are generally clean (see pictures) an acceptable example of the scarce first edition.

Per Wikipedia, Mary Pilkington (Born Mary Susanna Hopkins, 1761-1839) Was An English Writer. She Wrote Non-Fiction Including A Biographical Dictionary Of Art And An Edition Of Goldsmith, And Books Of Fiction And No-Fiction Moral Instruction For Children. Pilkington Was Born In Cambridge, England. Her Father Died When She Was 15 Years Old And She Went To Live With Her Grandfather. The Man Who Had Taken Over Her Father's Medical Practice Eventually Became Her Husband In 1786. While He Was Away Working As A Naval Surgeon, She Took Work As A Governess. She Published Over Forty Novels In The Years Leading Up To 1825, Many Of Them For Children. She Also Wrote For Periodicals, Notably The Lady's Monthly Museum ? Which She Left Over Poor Compensation[5] ? And The Lady's Magazine.
