8vo. xxvii, [1], 428, [8] pp. Errors in paging: p. 158, 359 misnumbered 152, 593. Dedicated to the Duke of Grafton. "Errata."--p. xxvi, "A catalogue of books, written by Dr. Priestley."--p. [429-432]. Original full calf, gilt spine bands, black gilt-stamped leather spine label; joints reinforced with kozo, extremities worn. In this volume Priestley attempts to compare Judeo-Christian institutions with those of Hinduism. Priestley believed that enough had been written on HinduismâÂÂ"mostly by visiting EnglishmenâÂÂ"to give a clear picture of the religion, one sufficiently detailed to allow him to compare and contrast it with his own. Unfortunately, the accounts of Hindi beliefs available to Priestley were generally exaggerated or simply fabricated, and in any case gave wildly different views of what Priestley wished to treat as a single religion. Consequently, A Comparison of the Institutions. . . reveals far more about Priestley's cultureâÂÂ"its prejudices, fixations, and general view of the otherâÂÂ"than actual Hindu practices of the time period. Priestley, Joseph (1733-1804). Experiments and observations relating to the principle of acidity, the composition of water, and phlogiston. In Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society 78, part 1 (1788): 147-157. Whole volume. vi, [2], 217pp. London: Lockyer Davis & Peter Elmsly, 1788. 260 x 190 mm. (uncut and largely unopened). Original wrappers, spine perished, some spotting. Minor foxing but very good. First Edition. Describing some of Priestley's experiments on the composition of water, in response to a query from Faujas de St. Fond on the conversion of air to water. "Priestley corresponded with Ingen-Housz, Price, Wedgwood, Withering and James Keir, reporting that his experiments showed the combination of dephlogisticated air and inflammable air produced not water but an acid . . . Keir and Withering had identified the acid as nitrous" (Schofield, The Enlightened Joseph Priestley, pp. 181-182). .

. [VIII],XLIV,[2],428,[4 publ. cat.]p. Contemp. calf, neatly rebacked, spine gilt ruled with old label, inner hinges strengthened, engraved bookplate of Chris[topher] Nicholson of Meath. A very clean and pleasant copy. First (only) edition. During the 1770's Priestley had published several works in which he expressed 'metaphysical unorthodoxies'. Priestley's views on determinism, materialism, causation and necessitarianism, particularly in his Disquisitions relating to matter and spirit of 1777, had disturbed his friends. The present correspondence includes objections made by Priestley's friend Richard Price, with the former's replies, as well as his replies to other opponents and 'additional illustrations by Dr Priestley'. *Crook 364. Original full mottled calf, blind-rules surround, gilt-stamped spine, dark leather spine label, marbled endleaves; rubbed. Very good. Rare. [374] First edition in French, the translation prepared by Jacques Gibelin (1744-1828). This is a translation of the author's Experiments and Observations (1774), printed in this edition with approval of the author. / "When Priestley published the first volume of his epoch-making Experiments and Observations on Different Kinds of Air (London, 1774), he had not anticipated that he would publish two further volumes with that title. Jacques Gibelin immediately translated it into French and showed Priestley the translation when they met in Paris in October 1774. Priestley approved the French version, and at the end (pp. 432-434) Gibelin prints a letter addressed to him by Priestley on 19 January 1775, in which he reports some of the new experiments. Gibelin published the translation with the "A. Berlin" (i.e., Paris) imprint in order to avoid the inevitable delay that resulted when permission to publish went through the usual French channels. The sheets were of the first issue were reissued (Paris, 1777), followed by two more volumes, with the approbation and privilege in volume III. The 1775 first issue is extremely rare." â" Neville. pp. (1), (1)-385. Title page loose, chipped with numerous XLib marks. Text browned and brittle. 12mo. 200 mm. Disbound. Poor. Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) was an 18th-century English theologian, Dissenter clergyman, natural philosopher, chemist, and liberal political theorist. He has historically been credited with the discovery of oxygen. During his lifetime, Priestley's considerable scientific reputation rested on his invention of soda water, his writings on electricity, and his discovery of several airs (gases). Priestley's science was integral to his theology, and he consistently tried to fuse Enlightenment rationalism with Christian theism. His committed Christian Unitarian beliefs got him into enormous trouble in England and he fled to America, finally settling in the woods of Northumberland, PA. where he is buried. It was a life full of discovery, praise, and vilification. The Discourses here include: The Duty of Mutual Exhortation; On Faith and Patience; On the Change Which Took Place in the Character of the Apostles After the Resurrection of Jesus Christ (Parts I & II); On the Necessity of Self-Examination; On Having Our Conversation in Heaven; Doing All to the Glory of God; Resignation to the Will of God; On Being Perfect as God is Perfect; On Habitual Devotion; The Duty of Not Living to Ourselves; Of the Danger of Bad Habits; A Discourse on the Resurrection of Jesus; The Importance of Free Inquiry. First Edition of the French Translation. "The paperfor which the Royal Society awarded Priestley the Copley medal, announced the discovery of hydrochloric acid and nitric oxide and the use of the latter in measuring the purity of air, which led through the work of Cavendish, Fontana and others to exact eudiometry. Priestley also observed that plants consume carbon dioxide and gave out oxygen, thereby purifying air which has been vitiated by combustion, respiration and putrefaction, and that this action takes place only under daylight." (PMM). These discoveries were first published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, 1772. "Two years later his experiments in heating red oxide of mercury produced "dephlogisticated air" which was announced in 1775 and identified by Lavoisier as oxygen." (Dibner Heralds of Science No. 40). Although the Swedish chemist Scheele had succeeded in isolating oxygen at least two years before Priestley, Priestley was long credited with the discovery of oxygen, as he was the first to publish his findings. Fourth and fifth volumes of the Expériences were published in 1780. Crook S/496-97-98. cfDibner 40. cfHorblit 85. cfPrinting and the Mind of Man 217.
