[4], 515, [1]; 552, [2]; 492, [2] pp.Very rare first and only edition of a compendious educational work intended for girls, dedicated (in the newly restored Bourbon monarchy) to Marie Thérèse de France (1778-1851), Duchesse d'Angoulême and daughter of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette, the only heir directly descended from Louis XVI to survive the Revolution. The dedication itself appears in volume 1 (1817), but is noted on all three title-pages (so also 1816). The present copy is in a beautiful armorial morocco binding clearly intended as a dedication copy for Marie Thérèse, with her arms on both boards of each volume. She had married her first cousin Louis Antoine d'Artois (1775-1844), Duc d'Angoulême in 1799 (he was to be King of France for 20 minutes in 1830 when his father and he abdicated, then pretender to the throne, calling himself Louis XIX). She was nearly forty and childless when the book appeared, soon after the 1814/15 restoration of the Bourbon monarchy with her uncle as King Louis XVIII. Rather than impale the husband's and father's arms as the English did, French ladies displayed them side by side: courtoisie. The book contains lessons in all subjects girls of good family should be taught. The first volume covers French grammar and syntax, with separate courses for younger and older girls, followed by a basic course in rhetoric. The second volume covers arithmetic and geography in single, extensive courses. The third and last volume covers history and mythology, again with separate courses for the younger and older girls, both presented like a catechism. with questions and answers for the children to learn by heart. In fine condition with only a small tear in the folding table and occasional very minor foxing. Fine copy in a fine armorial dedication binding for the daughter of King Louis XVI in the restored Bourbon monarchy.l KVK & WorldCat (5 copies); Quérard III, p. 245; not in Gumuchian; for the arms on the binding: Olivier, Manuel armoriées Françaises 2553, fer no. 2 (recorded on a different 1816 book).

FIRST EDITION, with an engraved frontispiece, a trifle browned in places, last 2 leaves with small fragments missing form fore-edge, pp. [iv], 287, 12mo, late 19th- or early 20th-century brown crushed morocco, spine lettered in gilt, monogram AC at foot, surmounted by a crown (of sorts), gilt edges, joints cracked and a little worn, but sound. Our author is not to be confused with the translator of the Thousand and One Nights nearly a century before. This is one of a small number of erotic tales he published between his release from prison (for writing against the Convention) and before he accompanied Napoleon on the expedition to Egypt. This is a rare book: 3 copies only in WorldCat, KVK adding only BnF and Augsburg. (Barbier, Genre romanesque, 1751-1800, 97.25).

His One thousand and one nights, first published from 1704 to 1717, contained the classic tales of Sinbad the sailor, Ali Baba and the forty thieves and Aladdin and his marvellous lamp. Not only was it the first translation of any part of the Thousand and one nights into any modern European language; it was the first published edition of any significant part of the work, which was not printed in Arabic until 1775, moreover the small bits that had been translated into Latin remained largely or wholly unpublished. Galland's book immediately became one of the essential sources of knowledge of the customs and mentalities of the medieval Near East, with his first volumes translated into English before his last volumes appeared. The present early edition of Antoine Galland s famous translation, in six attractive volumes, is sought after in part because of the extreme rarity of the first edition. The main source for Antoine Galland s compilation and translation was a collection of tales from Lebanon, mostly of Persian origin (or at least with Persian roots), translated into Arabic at the end of the seventh century. He supplemented it with material from at least two other manuscripts. The many editions and translations into most other Western languages many times over bear witness to its enormous influence.Antoine Galland (1646-1715) came from a family of small farmers, lost his father at the age of four and learned ancient Greek, Latin and Hebrew at the age of ten in Noyon. He later studied in Paris at the Collège Royal and the Sorbonne. His excellent knowledge of Greek persuaded the then French envoy Marquis de Nointel to take him on a five-year mission to the Sublime Porte in Constantinople in 1670, where Galland acquired a knowledge of Turkish, Persian and Arabic. In good condition, with a few small scuff marks on the spines but with the tooling well preserved, boards somewhat rubbed, corners and hinges worn, the latter often cracked at the head or foot, only 2 ribbon markers intact, 1 detached and 3 with only a remnant, occasional very slight browning.

It enjoyed a most remarkable success throughout Europe, perceptible even in children's literature, and contributed significantly to the new image which enlightened Europeans entertained of the Islamic East: after Galland, this was no longer the home of the Antichrist and of accursed heresy, but rather the ever-constant Orient beneath an eternally fair sky, boasting splendid colours and unheard-of wealth, Caliphs, Viziers, and Kadis, harems, fairy-tale princes, fairies and genies, sorcerers and sages, a world of fantastic adventure and outrageous incidents" (cf. Kupfertafeln, Schweinsldr. d.Zt. mit 2 Schließen; wenige Wurmlöcher in Buchdeckel; feines Expl. Second edition of the famous collection of technical experiments, including v. Guericke's celebrated experiments on vacuums at Magdeburg. With engr. title, portrait and 59 engraved plates! Little browning and foxing, brownish stain to outer margin of 2nd part, notice of dedication to title page; plate 16 of 1st part with small torn away corner, some tears to folding plate 17; lacking the half-title. Contemporary blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards with 2 brass clasps; some worming to covers. This famous encyclopedia of technical knowledge is especially important for its description of Otto von Guericke's fundamentally important experiments with the vacuum-pump and the celebrated Magdeburg Hemispheres, illustrated in a fine folding plate. The first book with 29 chapters "Mirabilia Magdeburgica" (pp.1-86,7 plates) is entirely devoted to the description of Guericke's experiments communicated to Schott in Letters, some of which are published here for the first time in the first edition 1664. Guericke did not published his famous book before 1672. Other subjects are treated as follows: Robert Boyle's experiment with the air pump. Toricelli's and others' experiments with mercury vacua; hydro-pneumatique experiments; mechanical marvels; secret writing; problems in cyclometry; the treatise "Mirabilia chronometrica" gives the first description of a universal joint and a classification of gear teeth" (Norman); perpetual motion,; miscellaneous marvels. The volume also contains one of the earliest accounts of the DIVING BELL with a fine engraved plate. This work is furthermore an interesting bridge between the new scientific knowledge of the time, and ancient lore, by virtue of its section on cabalistic writing and astrology. Caspar Schott (1608-66) Jesuit, student and assistant of Athanasius Kircher. During the last years of his life he decided to publish the mass of material he had collected on scientific subjects both from his own researches and those of others. He produced in a period of eight years (1658-1666) eleven books. He taught mathematics and physics at Mainz and Würzburg. He ".yearned for the intellectual delights of Rome, and after twenty-five years in Italy he suffered from German winters and had to have his own hypocaust installed.Exhausted, it is said, by overwork on his books, he died in 1666." DSB XII,211 "Encumbered by Schott's taste for the supernatural, his works contain much useful knowledge, descriptions of scientific instruments and mechanical technology.
