Die Studie prüft das Konzept der Intentionalität im Hinblick auf seine methodologische sowie ontologische Tragfähigkeit vor dem Hintergrund von Diskussionen zum Status der Phänomenologie, vor allem im französischen Sprachraum (M. Henry, J.-L. Marion). Durch Analysen zentraler Begriffe (Zeit, Horizont, Transzendenz) wird gezeigt, dass die Struktur der Intentionalität auf einem überaus problematischen Konzept der Phänomenalität beruht, das nicht weniger voraussetzt, als dass die Intentionalität sich selbst hervorbringt. Um diesen Paralogismus aufzulösen, untersucht die Arbeit in ihren Hauptteilen "Grenz-Phänomene" (Urimpression, Passivität, Alterität, Leiblichkeit und Affektivität), die die phänomenologische Methode mit den immanenten Grenzen der Intentionalität konfrontieren. Im Anschluss an die Kritik Michel Henrys wird so eine Destruktion der Intentionalität in ihrer bislang unbefragten methodologischen Funktion möglich, wie eine Problematisierung der Selbst-Konstitution historischer Phänomenologie insgesamt. Positiv besehen führt dies auf das Projekt einer "materialen" bzw.
