A light pencil drawing of a face to the verso of the second front free endpaper. Some pages misnumbered (xxxv, 129-144, 131, 36). Fine decorative engraving opening the "Épître"; woodcut head- and tailpieces, together with five woodcut textile diagrams. A sound and attractive copy of a trade manual. Very good. First edition of the first published description in French of the profession of silk designer, issued in Paris by Sébastien Jorry, Bauche, and Brocas in 1765. Until then, much of the specialized knowledge of the Lyon silk designer belonged to the workshop rather than the printed page. Joubert, himself a Lyon silk designer admitted to the guild by special dispensation, published the book despite the reservations of the city's silk-weaving guild, which feared that it would disclose its techniques to competing manufacturers abroad and argued that the manuscript should be kept from publication. Joubert took it to Paris regardless. Part trade manual, part artistic education, and part guide to the capital, the book was also something of a curriculum vitae for an author newly bankrupt and petitioning the state for a pension on the strength of his expertise. Ref. Miller L.E., Journal of Design History, 17.1 2004, pp. 29-53; Wiederkehr, Travaux de l'Institut d'Histoire de l'Art de Lyon, 7 1984, pp. 24-27; Metropolitan Museum of Art, 29.86.1. A historical and philosophical preface opens the work, tracing the development of Lyon's silk-design trade through its leading practitioners, foremost among them Jean Revel, and offering practical advice to parents on recognizing artistic aptitude worth cultivating in a child. Fourteen numbered chapters follow, each devoted to a named category of patterned silk: a remarkably detailed catalogue of luxury fabrics, from satin, damask, taffeta, and velvet to figured and brocaded textiles woven with gold and silver thread. The fourteenth and longest chapter is devoted to moires, the watered silks that were Joubert's own specialty. Five woodcut figures show point-repeat and comber-repeat arrangements for brocaded moire, including diagrams distinguishing designs worked "à pointe" from those worked "à chemin," and a four-part floral silk pattern intended for a moire five-thirds of an ell wide. The illustrations are technical rather than decorative: they translate the designer's repeat into a form that could be understood in relation to the loom. A fifteenth chapter, "Le Voyage de Paris," takes the young designer out of the workshop and through the capital, directing him toward its sights, shops, collections, and artistic resources as part of his professional education. The volume closes with Joubert's translation of six "tables raisonnées" from Pellegrino Antonio Orlandi's "Abecedario pittorico," taken from the enlarged Naples edition of 1733, which was dedicated to the painter Francesco Solimena. The section expands the silk designer's education into the fine arts, combining a bibliography of works on architecture and perspective with practical instruction and a canon of Old Masters. Particular artists are recommended for particular qualities worth studying: Correggio for softness, Raphael for grace and contour, Titian for composition, Veronese for invention, Claude Lorrain for landscape, and Michelangelo and Bernini for modeling.…

Le dessinateur, pour les fabriques d'étoffes d'or, d'argent et de soie, avec la traduction de six tables raisonnées tirées de 'Abecedario Pittorico, imprimé à Naples en 1733. Paris, Sébastien Jorry, Bauche et Brocas, 1765.8vo. xlviii + 218 + [5 + 1blank]p including chapter index, errata leaf & royal privilege. Engraved dedicatory arms on page 3; five fullpage woodcuts of floral design; 9 large ornamental engravings; marbled endpapers. 19th century quarter calf, marbled boards; gilt morocco label, spine richly gilt. First edition of what is considered the first French practical handbook for designers and manufacturers of luxury fabrics, especially silk. Compiled for the benefit of young artists, the guide is illustrated with 5 striking full-page woodcuts with floral embroidery designs suitable for various fabrics (satin, damask, silver & gold fabrics, velvet, silk, cotton & moire). Joubert de l Hiberderie (1715-1770), formerly chief-designer to Claude Pernon in Lyon dedicates his work to his friend Christophe de Freminville, treasurer general of Les Invalides. He advises the artist to study the human figure, flowers and ornamental designs by the great masters; In chapter XV, pp86 - 118 he encourages frequent visits to Paris describing all a designer should see, the great silk workshops, museums, palaces, the workshops of flower painters, the royal tapestry and porcelain factories, the royal gardens, the statuary of the boulevards, the church es and the opera including theatre, ballet and pantomimes; he draws attention to certain galleries for their old masters, and talks of theatres from the point of view of decoration. ( Comme l'étoffe est susceptible de divers petits agréments étrangers aux fleurs et aux fruits, qui sont l'essence de l'étoffe du goût, il est bon et même indispensable de voir les couturières et même les faiseuses de modes; on trouve chez elles mille petites choses destinées à embellir l'étoffe, et qui se marient parfaitement bien avec les dessins ); beginning at p119 is added a translation of sections of the Abecedario Pittorico, an Italian art dictionary written by Pelegrino Antonio Orlandi (1660-1727) comprising a bibliography of art, architecture and artists; the work concludes with advice to young painters, the care and repair of paintings, and finally a section on fresco painting. In his preface Joubert praises several outstanding artists connected to the Lyon manufacture among the 55 active designers: [Pierre de] Monlong (1712-89), [Jean] Revel (1683-1751), who produced chinoiserie silk designs in early rococo design, Courtois, the first to introduce shaded tones, and [Pierre] Ringuet (1698-1771), son of an architect working freelance for different workshops, described by Joubert as a man of great genius and a great de signer who was the first to introduce the design of natural flowers on cloth ; he also mentions Charles Le Brun (1619-90), decorator, designer and graphic artist. On p xix the author acknowledges his debt to the [Jean-Jacques] Bachelier (1724-1806), one of the most influential flower painters of the day, for teaching him over 8 months how to make detailed drawings of plants. In chapter xiv, page 81, Joubert makes an extended laudatory reference to [John] Badger, an English waterer ( moireur ) working in Lyon nous avons eu a Lyon le sieur Badjer, qui nous a aporté d Angleterre le cylindre merveilleux, & l apprêt avec lequel il fait un gros-de-tours une veritable glace , lorsqu on lui donne une étoffe fabriquées avec des belles matieres. (we had in Lyons Mr Badjer, who brought us from England the marvelous cylinder, and the finish with which he makes a real mirror, when given a fabric made with beautiful materials.) Joubert specialized in brocaded watered silks with uneven flowery patterns to which he de votes the longest chapter of his book he invented moëre broché.…
