The Lord of the Rings, film d'animation réalisé par Ralph Bakshi et sorti en 1978, constitue la première adaptation cinématographique ambitieuse de l'œuvre de J. R. R. Tolkien. Production américano-britannique distribuée par United Artists, elle couvre librement les événements des deux premiers volumes (The Fellowship of the Ring et The Two Towers), interrompant le récit après la bataille de Helm's Deep.
