Reads: 'My dear Sir/ | I have no doubt but that any statement which you may make to the Speaker will be in strict accordance with the facts; and I shall be always ready to bear testimony to your services during your connection with me - but for that very reason, I should not wish to impute [last word underlined three times] any document which you may have to present to him. Yrs ever faithfully | Francis Palgrave'. Postscript: 'I shall be here 'till 2 oClock & glad to see you.' In red ink, in a circle at head of page: '164'.

Palgrave begins: 'My dear Inglis/ | I have had such avalanches [last word underlined] of business - and most of a confidential nature - that I have really been unable to write to you. By confidential business I mean business of a class which I cannot open to mhy clerks - and what must be either copied by my own hands or at home - If it had not been for Fanny Brown in addition to her sister I do not know what I should have done'. He has a 'distant notion' of his 'future plans': going to Albano in August, and staying there until 'Rome becomes tolerably healthy'. He is in 'much perplexity about future residence', findigin it 'so difficult to suit me and your brothers'. He hopes to 'get rather more out of London', and thinks 'Mr Freshfield's house just behind Mr F's may suit'. In the last paragraph Palgrave refers to 'K Hall' and the 'hope that Frank [Palgrave's eldest son, Francis Turner Palgrave (1824-1897), editor of the celebrated 'Golden Treasury'] will fall upon his legs [.] But I can give no help in this matter, however much I could wish.'.

1p., 12mo. On bifolium, with the verso of the second leaf addressed to 'J. T. Smith esqr.' In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. The letter begins: 'My dear Sir | May I rely upon the kindness you have so often shewn me, in adding once more to your many attentions - it is to introduced the bearer who is my eldest son to the librarian in order to his obtaining leave to read, and also to copy out any extract from the Harleian or other collections.' He explains that the Marquess Wellesley, 'who as Steward of the Kings Household is sone of the Trustees of the Museum has asked me for the copy of a pedigree of his family from one of the Harleian MSS. of which my son has theh reference'.

Third edition revised throughout and greatly enlarged hard back binding in deep burgundy leather bound by Spottiswoode and Co. Ltd., rebacked preserving the parts of the original gilt labels, Eton College crest and parallel lines to both the front and rear covers, all page edges gilt, marble paper end papers. Thick 8vo. 9'' x 6¼''. Contains [xxv] + 3; 640 pages with illustrations by P. H. Delamotte, a steel engraving by C. H. Jeens, etc. 4 colour plates and many wood engravings to the text, includes a colour fold out plan of Eton, errata leaf. Sir Henry Churchill Maxwell Lyte was educated at Eton 1861-1865 (The Reverend Francis Furse Vidal's House). Two inscriptions to the second front free end paper Firstly: 'Hilary Philip Chadwyck-Healey from Francis Hay Rawlins, Eton 1906', secondly ' This book - together with a silver napkin ring - was presented to James John Harper Clark by the Chadwyck-Healey family in gratitude for his friendship with Hilary Philip Chadwyck-Healey who died 30th March 1976. Contains (xliii), 332 pp with many full-page single-sided monochrome illustrations throughout on slightly thicker brown card stock. First edition hard back binding in publisher's original magnificently decorated ornate red, blue, black and gilt front cover, gilt title and author lettering to the spine, gilt coat of arms and elaborate gilt border to the rear cover, red and gilt paste downs. Folio 14¾'' x 11½''. A gorgeous example of the colour printing skills of William Griggs with a full colour illuminated dedication page, frontispiece of The Royal Library, Windsor Castle, 21 pages of text with different colour illuminated chromolithographed borders followed by 152 full-page chromolithographic illustrated bindings. Tipped to the top of the front free end paper is a hand written letter on Windsor Castle headed note paper from the author concerning the publication of this volume dated 2nd November 1889, some three years before it went to press, SIGNED by the author 'R. Holmes'. From Lord Balfour's private library with pencil note to this effect inside the rear end paper. Neatly repaired tear across the top quarter of the spine, contents without any foxing in very near Fine condition. See his entry in the Oxford DNB, and that of the recipient, who is not named, but is Sir George Cornewall Lewis (1806-1863), Liberal Chancellor of the Exchequer, husband of the author Lady Theresa Lewis (1803-1865; ODNB), with whom he lived in Kent House in Knightsbridge. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded once for postage. 3pp, 12mo. Signed 'F. Palgrave'. Written in a difficult hand. Begins: 'My dear Sir / I should never think of [?] upon Lady Theresa the labour of searching through our dusty records'. He continues with reference to 'the Book & parchments of the Courts of Wards and Equity (the Council)'. He gives advice for her investigations, with reference to Dugdale, writing in an almost-impenetrable style.

One page, 4to, fold mark, good condition. Text: "Thank you so very much for the really adorable little book 'Theatrical Ashes' bound with the wood from the burnt Covent Garden Stage which you have presented to my collection. | It is a most valuable little memento and I shall show it in the Covent Garden exhibition which is going to take place here in December. | It is so kind of you to think of my collection." For information on Macqueen-Pope, see his entry in the Oxford DNB. The present item is from his papers. Unsigned carbon copy of typed letter, with '(W. Macqueen-Pope)' typed below space for signature. 2pp, 4to. Sixty-one lines of text. Text clear and complete, on lightly aged and creased paper, with slight water stain to one edge and damage to top left-hand corner from paperclip. The letter begins: 'My Dear John, / Re the toys which made Xmas long ago. One would want a picture of the men standing shoulder to shoulder down Ludgate Hill, in the gutter, selling the penny toys. These they carried on trays, with a support round their necks. The toys were of all sorts - a list -'. A list of thirty-two lines follows, beginning: 'Little men taking off their tall hats when a string was pulled. / Little tortoises in boxes with glass tops, which waggled their legs when moved.' Ends with: 'Little bits of metal like aeroplane propellors [sic] which rose in the air when pushed up a screwed rod. / Watchmen's rattles - yellow and red. / Bulls eye lanterns.' The recipient has followed each entry on the list with a tiny tick in ink. Macqueen-Pope continues with twenty-three lines listing 'toys which have almost if not quite vanished - b[u]t which cost more than a penny - some as much as sixpence'. These include: 'Tin palm tress [sic] bearing cocoanuts and a nigger smwarmed [sic] up it, caught a cocoa nut in a try on his head and came down.' and 'The Wheel of Life - a circular tin affair looking like a round saucepan with no handle. It had slots in the side. Into the bottom went a spike. You put rolls of paper - with illustrations inside, facing inwards, you twirled it round, looked through the slots and the pictures moved. This was the origin of the cinema.' Also 'Slap bangs, which went off with a satisfying bang when dropped. Scared old men and made cyclists think they had a puncture.' Postscript: 'White mice and pigs made of sugar. Tiger nuts - locusts. Everlasting stick'.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB, with that of the recipient Lady [Maria] Theresa Lewis (1803-1865), who lived in Kent House in Knightsbridge with her second husband Sir George Cornewall Lewis (1806-1863), Bart, Liberal Chancellor of the Exchequer, her first husband having been the novelist Thomas Henry Lister (1800-1842). The three items are in good condition, lightly aged. Written in a difficult hand. ONE (13 June 1850, 'Rolls House'): AL in the third person. 1p, 12mo. 'Sir F. Palgrave presents his compts', and informs her that something has been found in a certain book, and that 'a copy shall be made for her as soon as possible'. TWO (14 May 1851): ALS. 2pp, 12mo. Copies are being made of the three patents she enquired after. 'With regard to the Arbitration we have not been so successful, as you will see by Mr. D[?]'s note enclosed. Signed 'Francis Palgrave'. THREE (5 February 1852): ALS. 1p, 12mo. Signed 'F. Palgrave' and addressed to 'My dear Lady Theresa. Begins by explains that he is transmitting an order 'made by the Master of the Rolls for facilitating literary enquiries.' The rest of the letter is somewhat opaque. See Image.

1p., 8vo. In fair condition, on lightly aged and worn paper, with slight damage to corners from removal from mount. 20 lines of text. Regarding 'a Dr[af]t. on Snow & Co for twenty five pounds', he would 'willingly have put down the little trouble I had to the account of our mutual friendship in which I stand considerably your debtor but as you will have it otherwise I beg you will accept my sincere thanks for the inclosure, assuring you I consider it far beyond what I ought to have had'. He continues by stating that he is 'now obtaining a little relaxation from the fatigues of business, tho' I am still even here pursued by the Devils (of the Press) thank God, they are not blue Devils'. He ends with reference to Planta's son, 'arrived safe from Germany', whom he will happily take 'by the hand on my arrival in Town', and to 'Mrs. Planta & Mrs. Parish'.
