In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 1st ed., 1st printing] ; xxiii, 163 pages. : ill. OCLC 1136901049 ; blue cloth with printed labels ; Rev. Dr. John Kelman, for five years pastor of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church of New York, had preached in this city and at Princeton, and had delivered a course of lectures at Yale Divinity School. ; Annie Caroline MacDonald was an independent Christian missionary in Japan - described by the people she served as "the white angel of Tokyo". Once in Japan, Macdonald undertook an intensive six-month apprenticeship in the language, which she followed up with regular classes and another four months of concentrated study in 1911-12. Macdonald had been raised in the Social Gospel tradition and this upbringing would find an outlet in her concern for prison reform as well as in her support for the labour movement. Obliged to return home because of ill health in 1931, she died of lung cancer in London shortly afterwards. ; Fujiya Suzuki. Japanese lawyer (1882-1946), who was Ishii's lawyer and is quoted here from his preface to the Japanese edition, was a member of the House of Representatives of Japan ; IshiiTokichi, 1871?-1918, was a Japanese convicted serial killer and author. In 1915, he was sentenced to death for murdering four people: a couple, a police officer, and a woman. While on death row, Ishii converted to Christianity and wrote his confessions and this memoir whose English title is A Gentleman in Prison. Tokichi Ishii was hanged for murder in Tokyo in 1918. He had been sent to prison more than twenty times and was known for being as cruel as a tiger. Just before being sentenced to death, Tokichi was sent a New Testament by two Christian missionaries, Miss West and Miss McDonald. After a visit from Miss West, he began to read the story of Jesus's trial and execution. His attention was riveted by the sentence, "And Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do'" (Luke 23:34). This sentence transformed his life. He wrote, "People will say that I must have a very sorrowful heart because I am daily awaiting the execution of the death sentence. This is not the case. I feel neither sorrow nor distress nor any pain. Locked up in a prison cell six feet by nine in size I am infinitely happier than I was in the days of my sinning when I did not know God. Day and night, I am talking with Jesus Christ." ; Contents:Confessions -- Motive In Writing -- My Family And Upbringing -- Gambling -- My Wrongdoing Increases -- Prison -- Escape From Prison -- In The Clutches Of The Police Again -- Eleven Years In Prison -- From Bad To Worse -- A Christian Official -- A Letter From A Child -- A Letter From An Accomplice -- My Money Stolen -- I Find My Wife -- I Go To Kompira Shrine -- The Murder Of Oharu, The Geisha -- The Yokohama Murder -- I Steal Weapons To Commit Further Crimes -- Flight To Osaka -- First Crime In Tokyo -- Confession Of Oharu's Murder -- Memories And Reflections -- After Death ? -- A New Year's Gift In Prison -- A Visit From Miss West -- First Impressions -- " Father, Forgive Them !" -- Gifts Of The Prison House -- Crucifixion -- The Oharu Trial -- Prison Chaplains -- Haunted -- The Differences Between Men -- My Hymn -- Why The Police Do Not Catch Criminals -- Part Two: A Diary Of Impressions -- A thanksgiving For Illness -- The Kindness Of A Jailor -- Mercies -- Concerning Lawyers -- Lessons Learned From Suffering -- A Sparrow Teaches A Lesson -- The Story Of The Miner -- The True Heart Of A Child -- Those Two Friends Of Mine -- Paradoxes -- Bicycles -- The Haunted Well -- About Repentance -- The Forty- Seven Loyal Free Lances --The Twenty-third Psalm -- Earthquakes -- A Talk With Jailors And Policemen -- The Prison Bath -- About Judges -- Recollections -- The Kindness Of Officials -- Pitiful Little Ants -- ?he Writings Of An Uneducated Man -- " Thy Staff It Comforts Me" -- The Heart Of A Christian -- A Judge And A Chief Warder -- Notes Taken From Caroline Macdonald's Journal ; scarce ; VG.
