The branch was created in April of 1983 after a series of exhaustive studies and numerous general officer debates. Ultimately, the decision to create the branch was made on the basis of training, doctrine, and organizational shortcomings that were systematically created by the absence of a branch. This decision was not without controversy and detractors. Many senior officers feared that pure aviation officers would lose touch with the demands of the ground fight and move away from the close fight to pursue other missions as the Army Air Corps had done. There was also a fear that an aviation branch would make a nice neat package for takeover by the Air Force. A review of the past eighteen years of Army aviation reveals that both proponents and opponents of the branch were correct. Army aviation has largely fixed or at least improved all of the systematic problems that lead to its creation. Conversely, Army aviation has in fact moved away from the close fight in the past 20 years in pursuit of deep battle glories and status as a maneuver branch on par with Infantry and Armor. Aviation officers have lost some of their understanding of the ground fight and therefore are often reluctant to participate in it directly as a member of the combined arms team. Army aviation as a branch has largely been a success story but after eighteen years it is time for another detailed study of the branch to determine shortcomings and make changes to correct them. Dramatic changes such as assessing officers into aviation only after they have served four years in another combat arms branch (similar to Special Forces) should be considered. Aviation officers must regain their understanding and appreciation of the ground fight. They must be soldiers first and aviators second.…

Neuware - This paper seeks to answer the question of whether or not the modern threat environment should drive U.S. Army Attack Aviation to shift its focus from the deep fight to the close battle. The paper concludes that the modern threat of asymmetric warfare in urban environments should drive training, doctrine, and aircraft and weapons development to optimize readiness for close air support of ground forces in Military Operations on Urban Terrain (MOUT). This conclusion is based an historic review of the evolution of U.S. attack helicopters and their employment, an analysis of the modern threat environment which indicates a strong likelihood of fighting in urban environments, a review of existing aviation doctrine for MOUT, and a review of two recent MOUT case studies, Chechnya and Somalia. These two case studies demonstrate that the most effective method of employing attack helicopters in MOUT is as a fire support element in the close fight. This paper argues in closing that U.S. Army Aviation must move quickly to develop clear and effective doctrine and training methods for employing attack helicopters in the close fight. Furthermore, the U.S. Army must develop future aircraft, weapons systems, and munitions to optimize close air support effectiveness and aircraft survivability.…

The top edge of the dust jacket is lightly creased with a couple of tiny tears xiv, [1] & 400 pages, illustrated with a frontispiece and 16 pages of photographs. There is a small brown stain to the front edge of the front endpaper. Very good. First edition. The book is inscribed by the co-author Albert Murray on the half-title. Murray (1916-2013) was a novelist and a jazz critic. He was the author of "Stomping the Blues" and "The Hero and the Blues". The jazz musicians who have signed are: Rudy Rutherford (1924-1995), American jazz clarinetist and saxophonist. He played with Count Basie for three years in the early 1940's. Of him, Basie said: "(He) was also a hell of a clarinet player. Rudy really had that sound on clarinet. That's him in the V-disc take of 'Kansas City Stride' and also most of the other clarinet solos for the next year or so". Grover Mitchell (1930-2003), American jazz trombonist. Mitchell was a member of the Count Basie Orchestra from 1962-1970 and again from 1980-1984. Butch Miles (b.1944), American jazz drummer. He was with the Count Basie Orchestra from 1975-1979. Jimmy Lewis (1918-2000), American double bassist. He was with the Count Basie sextet in 1950. Lewis has signed twice. Eddie Preston (1925-2009), American jazz trumpeter. He played with Count Basie in 1963. Frank Wess (1922-2013), American jazz saxophonist and flutist. According to Count Basie, "Frank Wess is the man who really brought the flute into the jazz scene". Wess played with Count Basie from 1959-1964. Buddy Tate (1913-2001), American jazz saxophonist and clarinetist. He was with Count Basie from 1939-1948. Frank Foster (1928-2011), American saxophonist, flutist and composer/arranger. Foster was a frequent collaborator with Count Basie. Foster has signed twice. Freddie Green (1911-1987), American swing jazz guitarist. Green played rhythm guitar with the Count Basie Orchestra off and on for nearly 50 years. Bill Hughes (1930-2018), American jazz trombonist and band leader. Hughes was a member of the Count Basie Orchestra from 1953-1957 and later from 1963-2010. Eddie Durham (1906-1987), American jazz guitarist, trombonist and composer/arranger. Durham played with members of the Count Basie Orchestra in the late 1930's. He was a pioneer of the electric guitar in jazz. Benny Powell (1930-2010), American jazz trombonist. Powell played in the Count Basie Orchestra from 1951-1963. Ermet "E.V." Perry (c.1912-2000), American jazz trumpeter. Although he played with many of the great jazz bands of the era, we are uncertain as to his relationship with the Count Basie Orchestra.…
