Dabei soll ein Bild Gregorius' gezeichnet werden, das ihn als Sünder ohne eigene Schuld darstellt, wie bereits der Autor selbst in dessen Bezeichnung eines 'guoten sündære' anklingen lässt.Die Thematik erscheint dem Verfasser besonders interessant vor dem Hintergrund eines Vergleiches der heutigen Gesellschaft, in der immer mehr Menschen der Kirche den Rücken kehren und die Begriffe Schuld und Buße aus dem alltäglichen Sprachgebrauch nahezu verschwunden sind, mit jener aus der Zeit Hartmanns von Aue, die geprägt war von einer gottesfürchtigen Weltanschauung und einer vermeintlich engeren und strikteren Kontrolle durch die Instanz der Kirche und ihrer geistlichen Vertreter. So nehmen heutzutage immer weniger Christen die Beichte als Sakrament und reflektiertes Bekenntnis zur eigenen Schuld in Anspruch, denn die Kategorie der Sünde fehlt in der öffentlichen Sprache. Thomas Halik, Psychotherapeut und Priester, behauptet: 'Die Sünde ist etwas Lächerliches geworden.' Das zeigt, welche Aktualität und Parallelität in Hartmanns Gregorius stecken und, wie wichtig auch heute noch die Beschäftigung mit der Frage nach der eigenen Schuld ist.So ist es das Ziel dieser Arbeit, Gregorius als unverschuldeten aber dennoch reuigen Sünder darzustellen, indem seine vermeintlichen und tatsächlichen Sünden unter Zuhilfenahme des Textes erklärt werden und die fromme Aufrichtigkeit seiner Reue benannt wird. Die Erklärung und Auflösung des Paradoxons des Sünders ohne Schuld sind dabei von entscheidender Bedeutung. Ferner wird davon ausgegangen, dass Gregorius sich selbst als größten Sünder seiner Zeit betrachtet, obwohl die Wahrnehmung seiner Situation konträr zu einer heutigen Perspektive ist.Zu Beginn der Untersuchung nennt der Verfasser einige Arbeitsdefinitionen, deren teilweise widersprüchliche Aussagen in die Analyse der Schuldfrage einfließen. Zusätzlich wird die kirchliche Doktrin des Mittelalters in diese Überlegungen miteinbezogen. In Kapitel 3 werden darauf die konkreten Vergehen Gregorius' chronologisch aufgezählt und bewertet, bevor in Kapitel 4 Gregorius' Ansichten dargelegt und in Kapitel 5 die Stationen seiner Buße vor dem Hintergrund seines Gottesbildes betrachtet werden.

Meine zugrunde gelegte These besteht darin, dass der Autor, um den engen Grenzen der Gattung des Kriminalromans zu entfliehen, willentlich ein groteskes - der Realität jedoch nahes - Bild des Ermittlers zeichnet, indem er sich des Konzepts des Zufalls bedient und den Protagonisten somit zum unausweichlichen Scheitern verurteilt.Im ersten Schritt nimmt der Verfasser deshalb eine Charakterisierung der Ermittlerpersönlichkeit Dr. Matthäi vor, der dem Leser zunächst als klassischer Ermittler präsentiert wird, und geht dabei näher auf die ihn auszeichnenden Besonderheiten ein, welche die Brutalität und Grausamkeit, mit denen ihn der Zufall trifft, zusätzlich begünstigen und deshalb umso wirkungsvoller erscheinen lassen.Im anschließenden Teil widmet sich der Verfasser dem Grotesken und dessen Vor-kommen und Auftreten in Das Versprechen. Dabei bemüht er sich zunächst um eine allgemeine Definition des Grotesken, um ein einheitliches Verständnis des Begriffs voraussetzen zu können und geht dann der Fragestellung nach, welche Auswirkungen das Groteske auf den Leser hat. Des Weiteren beleuchtet er die Vorgehensweise, mit der DÜRRENMATT den Totengesang auf den Kriminalroman als solchen anstimmt.Schließlich bestimmt er den Zufall als das Mittel der Wahl, um die Groteske voranzutreiben und somit den Ermittler Matthäi unweigerlich und sukzessiv seinem Verderben preiszugeben.
