Softcover. Zustand: Near Fine. ART Exploration -"Pacific Encounters brings together for the first time many stunning Polynesian objects collected by voyagers and missionaries during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries." "Illustrated are over 270 items gathered from the major regions of Polynesia. Many are from the British Museum, which houses fine and rare material from the expeditions of Captain Cook, Captain Vancouver and members of the London Missionary Society. Ranging from massive images of gods to small fish hooks, they are discussed in the contexts of their local use and meanings, and their journeys to museums all over the world. These pieces have remarkable stories to tell of encounters between humans and their gods, between Polynesians and Europeans, their respective chiefs and priests, beliefs and technologies." Published to accompany the exhibition: Pacific encounters : art and divinity in Polynesia 1760-1860, Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, University of East Anglia, Norwich 21 May-13 August 2006. Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First Edition. London, Hutchinson, 1976. Large quarto, 487 pages with numerous maps and 250 pages of plates plus 8 colour plates (illustrating a total of 1927 items). Cloth a little rubbed (chiefly to the head and foot of the spine); edges lightly marked; top margin of the free endpapers and first and last few leaves slightly cockled; minor surface adhesion residue near the gutter of the frontispiece and title page (touched up with some white correction fluid); trifling signs of age and use; a very good copy with the lightly worn dustwrapper. When the book was published, the collection, formed over a period of sixty years, was 'the least known and least published of the great collections made this century (Oldman, Beasley, Fuller and Hooper) and the last to remain in private hands. (Hooper's) particular love was for the works of Polynesia, this section being the finest private collection in existence'. The author is the grandson of James Hooper; the book is rare and still of importance.
