Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Hardcover. Number 268 of 300 copies printer at the Riverside Press by H.O. Houghton & Company and published by Houghton Mifflin & Company. As Daniel Berkley Updike's successor, from 1896-1912, Bruce Rogers worked at Houghton Mifflin's Riverside Press. He most likely designed this elegant edition of this famed work by Omar Khayyam. The book was reviewed on June 30, 1900 by The New York Times, which called it an important limited edition. The write: "The first impression on taking up the new limited edition of the "Rubaiyat" of Omar Khayyam, edited by William Augustus Brown, from the second Quaritch edition of Fitz Gerald's edition, which Mr. Brown has modified by the insertion of omitted stanzas from the first edition and by some of the variants of the first, third, and fourth editions, is that of extreme pleasure in all its mechanical details." Of particular note in this edition are the lengthy introduction by Brown and the extensive notes regarding many of the stanzas. Bound in black paper covered boards with gilt title in Persian on the cover and brown cloth spine with titling in gilt. Publisher ornament in glit on rear cover. Chipping to corner and evidence of handling to covers and spine. Offsetting to endpapers. Beautifully printed in black with shoulder titles in red. Some browning to fore-edges. Bookplate of author Joseph Manuel Andreini on front pastedown. Very good condition. Measures 5.75 x 9 inches. 159 pages. PRI/110424.
