Hi! I'm Krista, author of The Sunflower. This story came about after we experienced first-hand the power of essential oils in a way that impacted our entire family. We had just moved onto an old 40-acre homestead with our four children, and were living in our trailer with plans to remodel the farmhouse. Our daughter, who was 6 at the time, planted 3 sunflower seeds in Sunday school. She set them up on a shelf outside so they could get plenty of sunshine, but one night, our cat jumped up, knocked them over, and one of the stems broke.

I used to be a kindergarten teacher, and I homeschool our kids, so my teacher mind went to work. I realized that I had an amazing opportunity for all of us to watch nature at work because I knew that inside the sunflower were essential oils. Plants contain essential oils to protect them, so I thought it would be an amazing experiment to see what would happen if we tested the essential oils in the sunflower.

My son made a splint for the stem and we watched in amazement as over the next few days the wound on the sunflower healed completely. I watched as the light bulbs went on for my kids and they realized, “That’s what essential oils do! They work in the plant like that, and that’s why they work for us!”

In that moment, I knew this was a story that needed to be told, so Bella and Lucy, two bunnies, became the main characters of a similar story as they watch the story of the sunflower unfold.
