L'espressione, spesso usata in modo riduttivo, non deve però ingannare; il dato poi non deriva solo da particolari opportunità professionali, ma soprattutto da una vocazione ad affrontare le diverse scale del progetto a partire da una minuziosa definizione degli elementi di dettaglio. La sua opera appartiene a un milieu professionale che, per linee dirette o indirette, sembra discendere dai modelli e dall'insegnamento di alcuni capiscuola milanesi, come Albini e Castiglioni, o considerati tali, come Gardella. Per la generazione di Claudio Dini, nata negli anni trenta e quaranta, ciò che ancora nel 1955 poteva apparire come slogan o raffinato virtuosismo diventa il metro su cui modellare i compiti dell'architetto. A essere trasmesso non è tanto un sapere codificato, quanto un atteggiamento disponibile a riesaminare, alla luce di una nuova cultura figurativa, ogni possibile tema proposto da una società in espansione. Per i giovani progettisti milanesi, la trasmissione non passa attraverso le aule del Politecnico, ma per altre vie: i "veri maestri" sono altrove, confinati a Venezia o proscritti dall'accademia. Il tramite è rappresentato dalle edizioni della Triennale e dalle riviste di architettura; quella generazione di studenti è, tra l'altro, la prima ad acquistarle e a "consumarle" con regolarità.
