With an engraved frontispiece of the Biblioteca Palatina, and two illustrated maps. Collated complete. A detailed latin dictionary, in four parts. Consisting of English-Latin, Latin-Classical, Latin-Proper, and Latin-Barbarous. In the English-Latin section, more words and properties of the language were set down, by several thousands, than in any other dictionary at the time. Including the most common Christian names of men and women, rendered into latin. Adam Littleton was an English cleric and lexicographer. He was a strong opponent of the parliamentary visitation at the University of Oxford, and was thus expelled from the university in 1648. Charles II appointed him a royal chaplain in 1670. He then went on to become prebendary of Westminster Abbey, rector of St. Botolph, Aldersgate and chaplain to Prince Rupert of the Rhine. With the previous owner's ink inscription, dated 1798 to the front free endpaper, and another ink signature to the rear free endpaper. A-Dddddddd4 In full calf binding. Externally, a trifle rubbed. Rubbing to the extremities. Marks to the boards. Rear joint starting. Front board loosening. Could become detached upon further handling. Rear hinge strained but still firm. Tape to the edges of the paste-downs. Marks and offsetting to the paste-downs. Age-toning, creasing and marks to the free endpapers. Ink inscriptions to both free endpapers. Stamp for 'Cornwell House' to the front free endpaper. Internally, binding almost detached between pages F4 and G. Creasing and tears to the front of the volume. Age-toning throughout with handling marks and scattered ink marks, although the text is generally still clear and legible. Heavier ink marks between pages rrr-ss3. Loss to page gggg. Good Only. book.
