Softcover. Zustand: Sehr gut. 1. Auflage. Z : 172 Seiten/pp. - Banks Violette and Gerald Matt present artists from different genres who share in a common fascination for the moral chasms of criminality. The seductive lore of the entire "noir" complex between nightmare and world loss is parsed and probed in art, literature, film and music. Dashiell Hammet's 1930 novel "The Maltese Falcon" first established the American noir series that describes a society - exemplarily with the figure of the hard-boiled private detective who himself is at home in the illegal milieu portrayed - in which the disillusioned anti-hero has lost any belief in a state of happiness. In the perfectly matched film by John Huston in 1941, which made Humphrey Bogart famous, Hollywood discovered the detective movie. Miles Davis provided the sound for the film music of Louis Malle's "L'Ascenseur de l'échafoud," an audible commentary on the frame of mind of a disoriented postwar generation between the wars in Indo-China and Algeria. The New York police photographer, Weegee, bequeathed us thousands of pictures of murderers and murder victims, gangsters and gawking onlookers that make up an impressive iconography of crime. The young New York artist, Banks Violette, in his sculptural and installative works, takes up aspects of this noir tradition and carries it over to the milieu of black-romantic youth cultures from the past twenty years, such as Black Metal or Neo Goth.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Since the 1990s, acclaimed Norwegian and London-based artist AK Dolven has produced a substantial body of work that explores the relationship between individuals and the perception of their environment, the connections that bind inner and outer realities. Using a diverse range of media, she combines seemingly simple, almost minimalistic elements to create complex responses to a particular locale - especially the frozen landscapes of the Arctic Circle - while maintaining a universal voice that resonates far beyond the specifics of the place. Frequently immersive in nature, her works investigate but also induce feelings of discomfort and disorientation in the eye, body and mind of the viewer, a sense of forever being at odds with one's surroundings. Coinciding with a solo exhibition at the Ikon Gallery, this book presents the past decade of the artist's practice. In five themed chapters, each artwork is shown in a series of large-scale installation shots and details that replicate the spatial and physical impact of the piece itself. Introductory texts to each chapter by five internationally renowned writers and thinkers illuminate various aspects of the artist's work, addressing, among other things, its political significance, emotional intensity and philosophical depth. An introduction by volume editor Gaby Hartel considers the importance of AK Dolven's sketchbooks to the genesis of her work, with a 24-page insert reproducing some of these sketchbooks in facsimile form. A second bound-in insert at the back of the book presents the artist's own notes on the works, with supporting source material.…

Softcover. Zustand: Sehr gut. 1. Auflage.

Hardcover. Zustand: Sehr gut. 1. Auflage. Z : 240 Seiten/pp., 160 farbige Abbildungen/illustrations in color, Leinen/clothbound - Jan Svankmajer (born 1934) is one of the most celebrated animation filmmakers in the world. Widely imitated and hugely influential for several generations of directors and animators, including Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam and the Brothers Quay, Svankmajer populates his surreal universe with sentient household objects, morphing clay figures, grotesquely exaggerated everyday sounds and a mood of paranoia pitched somewhere between Kafka and Poe. Among his best known works are the feature films "Alice" (1988), "Faust" (1994) and "Conspirators of Pleasure" (1996), and the short "Dimensions of Dialogue" (1982--chosen by Terry Gilliam as one of the ten best animations ever). His most recent film is 2010's "Surviving Life." "The Cabinet of Jan Svankmajer" is the first monographic overview of this major artist's work. Including excellent film stills, sculptures, illustrations and an interview with the filmmaker, it spans nearly 40 years of visionary creativity.…
