Pomeroy, Charles A. Traditional crafts of Japan: Illustrated with the Eighteenth-century artisan prints of Tachibana Minko. New York and Tokyo: Walker, Weatherhill, 1968, stated First Edition, vii, 119pp., dust-jacket with numerous chips and tears around edges, very good gray 1/4 cloth with decorated red boards, color illustrations throughout. Tachibana, Minko: active 1751-1777. -- Japan is justly famous for its craftsmanship, and many commentators have tried to explain the Japanese pre-eminence in this field. The present book makes abundantly clear that part of the reason lies in a long and cherished tradition of craftsmanship. And just now, when the old handicraft traditions seem to be under attack by the newer traditions of industrial crafts - of transistors and diesel trucks - a book such as this gains even greater value. The captivating prints that form the heart of the book may well be called a discovery, for they come from an album never before reproduced with an English commentary, and they represent a genre little known outside Japan. They date from the great age of Japanese woodblock printmaking - the age that produced such masters as Harunobu, Utamaro, and Sharaku - but their subject is neither the courtesans nor the actors of the "floating world" long since familiar to Western admirers of Oriental art. Instead, they picture the artisans of the time and their crafts, and they do this with a charm that has outlasted almost two centuries. Tachibana Minko's album of twenty-eight artisan prints was first published around 1770, since which time it has gone through several Japanese editions to become a classic, and early copies of the album are collectors' items. As far as intrinsic beauty is concerned, Minko's prints speak for themselves. Their composition, color, and style recommend them instantly, and the artisans stand out with personalities of their own. The swordsmith and the armorer are here, along with the maskmaker and the maker of folding fans, and the gallery of portraits even includes such quaint craftsmen as the quivermaker and the maker of paper hairdress ties. As a coherent work of art, this series of prints offers fascinating glimpses of life in old Japan. The twenty-eight artisan portraits, reproduced here with strict fidelity to the originals, are accompanied by an informative text that supplies a background for their appreciation: a brief introduction to set the stage, a historical sketch of each craft portrayed, an explanation of the legend inscribed on the print, and a commentary on the scene itself and its most prominent features. Taken together, then, the prints and text reinforce each other to become an entertaining, instructive, and artistic record of traditional Japanese trades and crafts. They provide a unified view of a distinguished tradition of craftsmanship in one of its significant manifestations. // Charles A. Pomeroy is well qualified to write on the subject of Japanese artisan prints. He is a long-time resident of Japan, a proficient student of the Japanese language, and the translator of a number of Japanese books dealing with Oriental arts and crafts. In addition, he is an accomplished printmaker himself, and his works have won the praise of Japanese art critics. Mr. Pomeroy is a graduate of Sophia University in Tokyo and makes his home in that city along with his wife and children.
