François-André Danican Philidor (1726-1795) était un musicien compositeur et un grand joueur d'échecs dont il a théorisé la pratique à travers son Analyse des échecs, publiée pour la première fois en 1749 et qui connut un grand succès. "La supériorité incontestable que Philidor conserva pendant près de cinquante ans sur les plus habiles joueurs d'échecs de l'Europe, suffirait seule pour faire apprécier le mérite de cet ouvrage, si d'ailleurs il n'était depuis long-tems reconnu comme l'un des meilleurs et des plus précieux qui aient été écrits sur la science de ce jeu. [.] Philidor publia son Analyse des Échecs en 1749 ; il n'avait alors que 23 ans, et il était déjà regardé comme le plus grand joueur de son siècle. [.] Ce ne fut que 28 ans après (en 1777) qu'il en donna une seconde édition. Le Supplément et les Fins de parties qu'il y ajouta, rendirent cet ouvrage beaucoup plus complet et en même tems plus élémentaire. Ce livre n'ayant été imprimé qu'en Angleterre et par souscription, l'édition s'en trouve aujourd'hui épuisée. J'ai donc cru rendre service aux amateurs des échecs, en leur en donnant un nouvelle, à laquelle j'ai adapté une notation abrégée plus comode et aussi intelligible que le langage ordinaire. Riedizione di Amsterdam di questa fortunata opera settecentesca sui giochi di anonimo autore (nella traduzione inglese essa viene attribuita all'abate Bellecour). Nell'opera si discorre ampiamente del backgammon (trictrac), degli scacchi, del biliardo, della quadriglia, del picchetto e di una quantità di altri giochi di società, di carte o da tavola in grande voga nel Settecento. La sezione scacchistica e quella sul trictrac sono attribuite al grande Philidor, il massimo giocatore del XVIII secolo. La presente impressione olandese è ampliata sia per quanto riguarda la sezione scacchistica che per quella consacrata al whist, quest'ultima opera di Edmond Hoyle. François André Danica, meglio noto come Philidor (Dreux, 1726-Londra, 1795), fu talentuoso musicista (allievo di Campra, compose musica sacra, un oratorio profano e, soprattutto, briosissime opere comiche che risentirono dell'influsso di Rameau) e, al contempo, fra i massimi scacchisti del XVIII secolo, nonché uno dei primi grandi codificatori moderni degli scacchi (la prima edizione del suo trattato su tale gioco fu edita ad Aix-la-Chapelle nel 1748). Philidor's original work, L'Analyse des échecs (Analysis of Chess), was first published in 1749 and revolutionized the game. He was the first to recognize and describe the strategic importance of pawns. The famous saying "Pawns are the soul of chess" (Les pions sont l'âme des échecs) originates from him. Before Philidor, players focused mainly on swift attacks by the pieces, but he demonstrated that a proper pawn structure determines the success of both attack and defense. Later edition of Philidor's (François-André Danican Philidor; 17261795) famous book on chess, that was published first in 1749. Philidor was regarded as the best chess player of his age. Published undated. An edition with the same colophon exists, it is dated to 1821. This is a later edition, still Goodspeed considered it as one of the earliest American books on chess, however some bibliographies assume that it was printed in Belgium. We found an identical edition at The Netherlands in the collection of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, they dated it to 1850, but most likely erroneously, as this copy has a dated handwritten dedication on January, 1844. There is one thing that all our sources agree, that this one is a scarce and rather interesting edition. The book advertisements at the rear are related to the publishing houses Delarue in Paris and Blocquel-Castiaux in Lille, that firms the European origin of the book. Une des toutes premières éditions de cet ouvrage, en particulier avec la musique gravée. Non datée, elle est néanmoins clairement d'époque comme le montre le catalogue sur la dernière page, qui est un catalogue à peine plus élaboré que celui du Peintre amoureux publié en 1757 par Desoer. Cette pièce est d'ailleurs cité dans le catalogue de notre exemplaire. Cet opéra-comique, le second après Le Diable à quatre - déjà sur un livre de Sedaine -, fut un grand succès. Cela explique les éditions nombreuses dès la publication et jusqu'à la fin du XVIIIe siècle. Malgré ce nombre, les éditions XVIIIe sont devenues rares. Demi-basane XIXe, dos lisse, filets. Exemplaire resté probablement broché jusqu'à sa reliure, un peu défraichi, mors supérieur faible par endroits et fendu en tête sur quelques cm. Rare exemplaire de l'époque de la pièce.…
