In a full calf binding. Externally, with rubbing to the boards and spine. Crack to the tail of the front joint, resulting in the leather to be lifting a little. Small amount of loss to the head of the spine. Small crack to the head of the rear joint. Some marks to the boards and the spine. Minor bumping to the extremities. Front hinge is starting but firm. Text block complete and in one piece. 440 pages + index. Folio with wide margins, crisp corners. Some foxing and fading and mild wrinkling from age. Some dampstains in the margins here and there. A wonderful hodge podge -- printed in Latin, French and English -- and in both a nice Roman font and heavy blackletter Fraktur. Printed page opposite title page, in English, orders the printing of this title, due to the "great learning and judgment of the Author," dated 7 March 1700. Early ownership name on the title page, "John Carter." I like to imagine that this is John Carter, the son of Robert "King" Carter, the Colonial Governor of Virginia (but I can't find a copy of his signature for comparison). Housed in Shirburn Castle, near Watlington, Oxfordshire, it was one of the finest private libraries in Great Britain. Thomas Parker [1666-1732], the first Earl of Macclesfield, was a hugely successful lawyer and Whig MP. He became Lord Chief Justice of England in 1710 and, in 1718, Lord Chancellor. Unfortunately, his meteoric rise was countered by an equally rapid fall in 1725 when he was impeached and found guilty of financial irregularities as Lord Chancellor.
