Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - NATO's first major air campaign of the 21st century reveals how reliance on limited aerial capabilities and cautious targeting shaped a strategic stalemate, post-conflict instability, and shifting regional power dynamics in the Mediterranean.Alexandros Boufesis' retelling of Operations Odyssey Dawn and Unified Protector is a comprehensive analysis and evaluation of the 2011 international military intervention in Libya. The focus of the text is that of the air operations conducted, their impacts and the air war's operational mechanics, reviewing and assessing both the contemporary and current geopolitical consequences through to the present day.The narrative traces the rise of Muammar Qaddafi, exploring his methods for consolidating domestic power through complex tribal alliances whilst looking to impose himself on the Arab and European political stages. Boufesis then examines Libya's transition from a sponsor of global terrorism to that of a state seeking reconciliation with Western nations in the early 2000s. This historical context sets the stage for the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings; protests that rapidly escalated from civil demonstrations into a full-scale armed rebellion, as Qaddafi 's powerplays revealed the shifting foundations on which they had been built. The critical analysis of the international, predominantly Western, military response forms the heart of the narrative. The author analyses the initial combat phase, led by the United States, and the subsequent transition of command to NATO. The text describes and evaluates the capabilities and capability shortfalls faced by the European allies. Deficiencies that forced a continued reliance on American intelligence, surveillance and logistical support throughout the remainder of the campaign.Enhanced with over a hundred photographs and maps and utilising a vast bank of written sources, the text documents Qaddafi 's rise and fall and the Libyan state beyond his eventual demise. The author has created a narrative that astutely illustrates the matters arising in waging coalition warfare and also the inherent dangers of over reliance on a single power source to drive and coordinate military operations. It is a compelling tale of recent North African history and a text of relevance for the region today. …

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Operation Unified Protector marked a historic moment as the first time NATO assumed command of an allied military campaign, taking over from the US-led Operation Odyssey Dawn. Tasked with protecting civilians from Muammar Qaddafi's forces during the 2011 Libyan Civil War, the operation exposed significant capability gaps within the alliance. NATO's heavy reliance on the United States for aerial refuelling, ISR (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance), suppression of enemy air defences (SEAD), electronic warfare, command and control, and target acquisition underscored structural weaknesses that remain unresolved to this day. These limitations have only become more pressing in light of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the prospect of future US strategic prioritisation of the Asia-Pacific theatre. Initially hampered by a dysfunctional command and control structure and an overly cautious targeting process, the air campaign drifted into stalemate. Only when rebel forces launched a coordinated ground offensive from Misrata and the Nafusa Mountains did the tide turn. The fall of Tripoli, followed by the battle for Sirte and the death of Qaddafi, brought an end to the operation-but ushered in a decade of instability. In the post-intervention vacuum, Libya descended into chaos. The emergence of General Khalifa Haftar as a dominant figure and his campaigns-initially aimed at rooting out Islamist elements and the Islamic State-were backed by several foreign powers and hailed by some as a source of stability. However, Turkey's armed intervention in support of the UN-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA) not only halted Haftar's advance on Tripoli, but also triggered new geopolitical tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean. Ankara's maritime ambitions clashed directly with the interests of Greece and Egypt, complicating regional security and maritime boundary disputes. As with all titles in Helion's at War series, this volume is illustrated throughout with rare photographs, detailed colour artworks, maps, and organisational charts. It provides a thorough, critical analysis of NATO's first major air campaign of the 21st century and its profound consequences for the alliance, Libya, and the evolving balance of power in the Mediterranean and beyond. 120 colour photos, 20 colour profiles, 4 colour maps Operations Odyssey Dawn and Unified Protector were launched to protect civilians from the Qaddafi regime's offensive. Although successful, NATO-led Unified Protector showed NATO deficiencies, which persist up to date. Qaddafi's demise led to anarchy and the rise of militias, while Libya remains dichotomized between Benghazi and Tripoli, exacerbatin Shipping may be from our Sydney, NSW warehouse or from our UK or US warehouse, depending on stock availability.…
