Addressing his letter to 'J: S: Buckingham Esqre.', Pollock writes that Buckingham's letter, 'enclosing the Rules &c. of the British and Foreign Institute', has been forwarded to him in Monmouth, where he is 'engaged on a long Circuit professionally, which comprehends all South Wales, and the West and South of England'. He is 'on the move continually', without 'time or opportunity to give sufficient consideration to the subject'. He will 'return to Town' in December, when he will 'take an early opportunity of making my appearance as a member of the Committee', and will 'confer' with Buckingham: 'I see you have had to answer an attack, as some one has taken the trouble to send me a Copy of the "Times" of the 25th. inst. which accompanied a Letter from you [.] You need not complain, as you have evidently a triumph upon all the points started.' According to Buckingham's entry in the Oxford DNB, in 1844 he was 'instrumental in the foundation of the British and Foreign Institute in Hanover Square. This literary and social club, of which he was appointed resident director, drew the ridicule of Punch, which persisted in calling it the 'Literary and Foreign Destitute'. The institute was closed in 1846.' Pollock was appointed Chief Justice of Bombay in 1846, and knighted in the same year.

In den Warenkorb1p., landscape 16mo (8.5 x 13 cm). Good, on aged paper, with blank second leaf of bifolium bearing evidence of previous mounting. The poem is neatly written out, in a sensitive hand, and is eight lines long: 'Fairyland! Fairyland! | That must be a pleasant spot: | Silver rippled over the strand, | Murmurs in each cave & grot, | Jewelled fruits upon the trees, | Music floating on the air, | Perfumes breathing on the breeze -, | How I wish that I was there! | [signed] Julia S. H. Pardoe'. The poem was presumably written in response to a request for an autograph, and there is no indication that it was ever published.

In den WarenkorbEnglish writer (died 1887), traveller in the Middle East, and philanthropist. Four pages, 16mo. Good, but with traces of grey-paper mount adhering to verso of second leaf of bifoliate, to which adheres a cutting relating to the circumstances of Lady Strangford's marriage. She has been in bed for ten days, and although 'still in a state of great weakness - and non-writingness', writes to apologise for Lord Strangford's mistake: 'as he was expecting to be accosted by a lady much of your size he answered accordingly with an enquiry for her husband. It came to him the next moment that the "voice was not Jacob's voice" - but it was too late to find you again and he came home in a state of shame & confusion. I dont think any one bears him malice for his many mistakes of vision - & you will not be the first to . The marvel is how he gets on at all with such eyes anywhere.' She hopes she will 'charitably come & see me' as she expects 'to be a prisoner for a long time'. Signed 'E. A. Strangford'.

List; C. R. Hudleston.)' Farr also published three economic pamphlets: 'A Remedy for the Distresses of the Nation' (1840), which elicited a response from Sir Francis Place, and 'A Short Statement of Facts connected with the proposed Changes in our Commercial Tarif [sic]' and 'The Principal Difficulties of the Sliding Scale removed' (both 1841). The present item is 2pp, 4to, on the first leaf of a bifolium, on the reverse of the second leaf of which is written 'To / Dawson Turner Esq / Yarmouth.' In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Folded for postage. Addressed to 'My Dear Sir' and signed 'Thomas Farr', with a strange flourish at the end of the signature. Twenty-six lines of text, in a crabbed and not entirely legible hand. He begins by stating that he is sending him 'a letter of General A [Alanas?] written in answer to one giving him the details of the capture of Irun by Genl Evans - La Gentille Reverende alludes to Mrs Phips the wife of Mr P who was & is now resiging at Tours - she is a pretty woman & fond of dress - as General A writes a most extraordinary hand, I have sent you a copy with the original'. He is also sending 'a note of Evans's should you think it worth preserving - when I was in Madeira a Catalogue had not been printed of the Dutch and Flemish Schools, so you will find no account of the fine Teniers Vandykes & Rubens that are beautifully arranged in the finest gallery in the world'. He is sending a 'copy of the Lithographic work', the 'only one taken in this country' being 'in the name of the President of the Royal Academy', which he asks Turner to keep 'until I have the pleasure of seeing you again'. 'I have to beg your acceptance of my "Reminiscences of the Spanish War", asking him to send a second copy to his 'aunt Farr'. He is on his way to Baden-Baden, and wonders if he can procure for Turner 'some autographs of the Bonaparte family from Hen. R. H. the Dowager Grand Dutchess, who is a niece of Josephines' there. A four-line postscript refers to a lettter without a postmark, and the British Consul at Bayonne.
