[book is very nice, virtually no wear at all, the faintest bit of soiling and age-toning to page edges; jacket has one slightly ragged closed tear at bottom front hinge and extending into spine, very minor paper loss at bottom corners of front panel, one additional closed tear at bottom of rear panel]. Novel about a young Cambridge undergraduate, "physically brave [but] a moral coward," who lets himself be blackmailed in order to conceal his affair with a knocked-up-by-somebody-else girl from his overbearing father (who's a Canon of the Church, just to make it all the worse), kills the blackmailer, is convicted and sent to prison, from which he escapes (to America, as far as Kansas City), etc. By the time he wends his way back to England via Canada, there's a war on, so of course being a true-blue Englishman at heart, he finds a way to enlist, and by golly if he doesn't end up earning the Victoria Cross for his heroism, at which point his backstory comes fully to light and everybody decides he's not such a bad guy after all. (I wonder what ever happened to the pregnant girl, who seems to basically vanish from the narrative about forty pages in, leaving Our Hero hanging out to dry?)
