John G. Roberts

John G. Roberts is a native Californian, growing up in the small Los Angeles County town of Covina. After leaving college he was drafted into the U.S. Army in January, 1969. Trained as a combat infantryman, he was sent to Vietnam and assigned to the Screaming Eagles, the famous 101st Airborne Division. He served in the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment (the "O-Deuce") and saw heavy combat during Operation Texas Star in the spring and summer of 1970. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. Returning home, he joined the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department which provides law enforcement services for the largest county (over 20,000 square miles) in the lower 48 states. After suffering a career-ending injury he retired from law enforcement after 22 years and became a licensed private investigator. Roberts began to write Mighty Men of Valor in 1982 and it took him until 2012 to both gather all the documents needed and find and interview some of the surviving combat veterans he had served with. During this time he, along with thousands of other Vietnam combat veterans, dealt with the ongoing symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and its effect on his daily life and career.
