In den Warenkorbpaperback. Zustand: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

In den Warenkorb2pp., 4to. Good, on lightly-aged laid paper. Bower begins by stating that he is sending 'a Copy of a Letter which I have received from Dr Carm Smyth [James Carmichael Smyth (1742-1821) of the Middlesex Hospital]'. Smyth's son (the future Sir James Carmichael-Smyth) is 'a very fine handsome young man Lieut in the Engineers come out a Passanger [sic] in the same ship with us'. Bower and Smyth 'wisely went into the Boat which was lashed to the Stern Gallery to fish sharks which were following the ship - the Boat suddenly canted round in the slings, upon which poor Smyth went plump into the sea'. Bower 'happened to catch hold of the Boat & by the dictate of instinct & fear together, scrambled up again & got into the Stern Gallery'. The slings being 'foul', an attempt to lower the boat failed, and 'poor Smyth was nearly exhausted when I jumpt from the great Cabin window & kept him up till we were both Pickt up'. Bower continues: 'I will thank you to tell his Dad that I think myself well rewarded for my Ducking by the satisfaction I derive from his Letter'. Dr Smyth has sent Bower 'a very fine field Glass', and Bower asks his father to 'tell Sandy to call on Dr Smyth if he goes to London, he is a man of considerable eminence in his profession'. The doctor has 'exerted himself on my account for my promotion in the Army', and 'if he can serve either Graham or Sandy' Bower will think himself 'Greatly overpaid'. The Gentleman's Magazine of February 1800, pp.181-182, gives an unusually long entry on Captain Bower's death, at 'the isle of Perrim, on the Red Sea', praising his character and accomplishments.

Very good condition. Rare. Report on the Scientific Results of the Voyage of HMS Challenger during the years 1873-76. Most of the report relates to the findings on the Thylacine and published as Volume 5 (Zoology) of "Report on the Scientific Results of the Voyage of H.M.S. Challenger". Includes work on Cuscus and Phascogale. The Tasmanian tiger or Thylacine was an iconic Australian marsupial predator that was hunted to extinction in the early 1900's. During H.M.S. Challenger's stay in Sydney in 1874, two specimens (male and female) of the thylacine were presented to the scientists on board by Charles Du Cane, the then Governor of Tasmania and taken back to the British vertebrate zoologist and anatomist, Dr Daniel John Cunningham. Much of what we know today about the internal anatomy of the thylacine is derived from Cunningham's meticulous anatomical dissections and published here in this report. Eight plates (of thirteen) in the report relate to the now extinct Thylacine: Plates I, IV, V, VI, IX, X, XII, XII.

Leather Bound. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 31 p.; 70 p. 21 cm. Quarter leather with marbled boards. Spine label reads "Tracts." Rebound with new endpapers. Spine worn and boards rubbed. . Reverse of p. 31 in first tract is noticeably dark, and the leaves of this section bear more thumbing and staining than the rest of the text, which is only darkened on the first and last pages. The first tract is also shorter than the rest of the text block and bound slightly askew, but cut with the rest of the pages, and there is a tear in the centre of the block at the spine from the thread of its original binding. A few typos are corrected by hand in the first document. Williams' narrative, the second document, has lost its half-title and title-page. Title continues: "Captain William's Narrative; in which is contained particulars relative to the execution of Mustapha Cawn; and observations on the speeches of General Burgoyne, Colonel Fullarton, Mr. Fox, Mr. Burke, and, Mr. Francis; addressed to The Officers of the British Army." This volume contains two related books. The first letter pertains to Pitt's India Act of 1784. The second is by Captain Williams, who put Mustapha Cawn to death without a trial, exactly the type of behaviour Pitt was trying to overcome with legislation in the British Parliament. The resulting Narrative is Williams' defense of his actions.
