Since 1966, when Economic Weekly formally expanded its mission and became the Economic and Political Weekly, it has been a significant space for critical, constructive and innovative thinking on political, social and economic issues. Reading India, Vol. II, the second of the three volumes commemorating 50 years of the EPW, brings together a selection of articles from 1966-1991. Divided into three fields of inquiry the political, social and economic it presents an analysis of the issues and concerns that dominated this period, and in some ways, shaped the discourse of the following decades. The first section, dealing with politics, focuses on two concerns of this period - democracy and equality. The essays examine issues related to: political representation, electoral processes, policies of reservation, inter-caste and inter-religious conflict, status of women, and measurement of poverty. The second section takes up the concerns highlighted by sociologists and social anthropologists: the changing Indian family, rural leadership patterns, economic and social changes taking place in India s rural economy, affirmative action and the marginalisation of religious minorities. The final section showcases trends in economic thinking during this period, which questioned the economic policies of the era and shaped the direction and nature of the post-1991 reforms. Together, this collection presents analysis, research and debates that are relevant even today for understanding India. (jacket).…

Rural and urban are the foremost categories through which social life has been visualised and engaged with in modern and contemporary times. The idea of the rural or the village has been of particular significance in India. British colonisers represented India to the world as a land of village republics . This representation was so influential that even the nationalist leaders accepted it uncritically. Gandhi advocated a return to the village as the only genuine way to gaining swaraj, or self-rule. Nehru and Ambedkar too saw the village as the site of India s traditional life; however, to them it was also a signifier of India s economic backwardness and social ills. These notions have shaped social science scholarship, popular politics and public policy. The idea of such a demographic transition continues to be a core element of state policy and an important indicator of positive social change and economic growth/ modernisation. However, the rural in India persists; nearly two-thirds of India s population still lives in rural settlements. A Handbook of Rural India, brings together.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. 'India lives in its villages'. This statement popularized by Mahatma Gandhi is often referred to in discussions about the country, its past, and its possible future. But what exactly is the Indian village? In the most basic sense, the 'village' is a kind of human settlement, always standing in contrast to the 'town' or 'city'. Yet, it is also an idea, one which has undergone myriad shifts over the course of our nation's history. In The Indian Village: Rural Lives in the 21st Century, award-winning sociologist Surinder S. Jodhka critically examines the changing nature of the village in India, both as an idea and as a lived reality. Reflecting on the colonial construction of India as a land of village republics, a representation that was turned on its head in different ways by Indian nationalists in the early twentieth century, and the post-liberalization nation, this book provides a detailed account of how rural lives have been transformed in India through the decades. The book also looks at India's modern villages to showcase the current diversity within agrarian and rural realities with specific focus on the processes of development and democracy in rural areas. The Indian village, the author suggests, is not a relic of the past. It has always been a dynamic reality and it lives on in an active relationship with the wider world. Besides its many other aspects and processes, it enables the city to prosper, just as the city keeps the village going. Radical, innovative, and grounded in impeccable scholarship, The Indian Village is a seminal study of rural India.…

Son or Daughter?: Son Preference in a Southwest Community of China/Zhang Liping. China and India the two emerging economies with growing influence the world over are also undergoing profound social and cultural change. While China introduced a variety of economic and political reforms in 1978, India initiated economic reforms only in 1991. These shifts produced significantly higher rates of growth than witnessed during the preceding decades. The rapid pace of economic growth in both these countries transformed their economies in many ways, but economic transformation does not occur in isolation. Culture and social institutions also influence, and are influenced by the processes of economic change. While much is written on these subjects in each country, there is hardly any attempt made to approach these concerns from a comparative perspective. This volume, therefore, attempts a comparative understanding of the two great nations and their diverse social and cultural realities. The essays focus on a wide variety of topics concerning the contemporary societies of China and India, such as the middle classes and consumption patterns, the processes of migrations, labour markets, regional inequalities and housing besides critical social and policy concerns such as gender bias and discrimination, religious life and ethnic minorities. This volume is in a way a beginning towards developing new ways of looking at the two societies by learning from each other s experience. It would also help building a better perception of each other within the two countries. …

Hasn t enough research been conducted on the subject; and doesn t writing on or about caste help keep it alive? The continued significance of caste in India s public life is said to be because of the reservation policy or because of electoral politics, with caste being viewed as a convenient mode of securing a stable vote bank. Contested Hierarchies, Persisting Influence shows, however, that caste survives beyond electoral politics and quotas. Caste-based divisions continue to matter not only in the village, but also in modern-day urban life, business, institutions of higher education, and many other spheres of contemporary social practice. The chapters in this book, written by some of the leading scholars of Indian society and based on hard empirical evidence, present complex dynamics of the interplay of caste with electoral politics, its change and persistence, and its continued significance in various regional and historical contexts. The rich ethnographic studies show how caste survives as a resource of social and cultural capital, and as a relationship that is always defined by power, hierarchy and inequality. The authors state that caste influences and determines people s access to nourishment, shelter, property, and personal and financial security. This book provides a rounded assessment of the subject that presents the complexities of caste practices in twenty-first century India. (jacket).…

Jodhka. Despite its steady growth during the post-Independence period, agriculture in India has been progressively shrinking in terms of its contribution to the national income. However, it continues to provide a source of livelihood and employment to a large proportion of Indians. Its social worth even in 21st-century India remains far greater than its economic value. Given its demographic and social weight, it remains crucial for policy makers. Further, in countries like India and the larger universe of the Global South, agrarian economies function within a variety of complex relational structures, shaped by local histories and the broader processes of their political economies. Thus, the question of agrarian change is as much about social transformation as it is about economic growth. India presents a fascinating example of such a process.
