(crime scene maps) A collaborative detective novel to which six noted British mystery writers of the day contributed a chapter. The project was supervised by John Chancellor, who has contributed a Preface and a Prologue, in which he explains that the idea was conceived by two British newspapermen, and "as each author completed a chapter the growing manuscript was handed on to the next man or woman [along with] the notes supplied by the various authors for the guidance of their successors." Chancellor's task was "to straighten things out, and a good deal of straightening out was necessary, for each new brain as it approached the task had set off in a different direction from that followed by its predecessors." (This was hardly a brand-new idea: in fact, the two top-billed authors here (Sayers and Crofts) had been part of an earlier group called the Detection Club, and had participated in the writing of a couple of similar novels in the early 1930s. In America, at least one example that occurs off the top was "The President's Mystery Story," published in 1935 (and supposedly based on an idea by FDR), in which the same procedure was followed by Rupert Hughes, S.S. Van Dine, and several others.) NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing.…

First edition, first printing. Original black cloth with orange titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. With two maps of the scene of the crime. A very good copy, the binding a little rubbed and bumped to the extremities. The contents are clean throughout, with a previous owner's name to the front free endpaper and some spotting of the text block edge, visible when the book is closed. Complete with the very good rubbed, nicked and darkened dustwrapper which has small chips at the spine tips. Correctly priced 7/6net to the spine. Rare in dustwrapper.
