About the book >.>.> Native Apples of Gloucestershire by Charles Martell explores the rich legacy of apple cultivation in Gloucestershire, tracing the historical journey of the Malus species over 8000 years. The narrative begins with the biological evolution of apples from their origins in regions like China, leading to their migration westward influenced by human interaction. By Roman times, the apple had transformed into a familiar fruit, but it took another millennium of cultivation and selective practices to develop the diverse types and varieties known in post-Norman Britain.Gloucestershire emerged as a notable hub for apple cultivation, renowned for producing some of the finest apples, both for eating and cooking, as well as for cider-making. By the mid-1800s, the region boasted approximately 15,000 acres of apple orchards, significantly contributing to food production and local economies. The diversity of locally distinct apple varieties, shaped by centuries of both natural and human influences, represents a valuable genetic heritage. However, the last seventy years have witnessed a dramatic decline in the traditional orchards of Gloucestershire, with the area shrinking to about 3,000 acres. This loss underscores the urgency to protect and preserve the region's apple heritage. To address this, an updated inventory of existing apple varieties, a project spearheaded by Charles Martell, has been initiated. While the inventory seeks to document the unique characteristics of these apples, it acknowledges that new discoveries of previously lost varieties continue to emerge, ensuring that the efforts to safeguard this culinary legacy are ongoing.
