Magazine. Zustand: Very Good +. 32pp. Newsprint [43cm x 27.5cm / 17" x 11"]. Eight bifolia (sheets folded vertically once to form thirty-two pages). Horizontal crease throughout, as issued (folded for distribution). Paper is lightly age-toned, especially around edges and folds. Occasional soft creasing or short tearing along edges in the margins, else, a nice and clean copy. With an article by Edward Abbey titled "Forward! To Ecodefense." Also with an advertisement for "Ecodefense: A Field Guide to Monkeywrenching" (Edited by Dave Foreman. Forward by Ed Abbey." Earth First! is a group of radical environmentalists that formed in the American Southwest in the spring of 1980, founded by Dave Foreman, Mike Roselle, Howie Wolke, Bart Koehler, and Ron Kezar, among others. Earth First! quickly came to national attention with their "cracking" of Glen Canyon Dam activist stunt, which was performed and filmed in the spring of 1981. Edward Abbey is considered to be the "literary father" of the group. "Earth First! is the beginning of the new, bold environmental movement. And 'Earth First! The Radical Environmental Journal' is its voice. No compromise in the defense of Mother Earth!" (Dave Foreman, Editor). Rear cover half-page illustration by Brush Wolf, dated '83, is entitled "It's Not Just Defense, It's Revenge" and depicts a grizzly bear with one of its paws stuck in a metal trap. Cover story is entitled "Forest Service Logs Texas Wilderness." Lengthy "Earth First! Directory!" printed on page 12. The centerfold spread (pages 16-17) feature is entitled "Professionalism: A Discussion" which features written perspectives on the matter of professionalism amongst environmentalists from Dave Foreman, Kirk Cunningham, Randal O'Toole, Reed Noss, Ed Clark, Gerald Meral, Ron Huber, and Jim Dale Vickery. Edward Abbey's contribution on page 26 is "Forward! To Ecodefense" which is the foreword of the (then) forthcoming book "Ecodefense: A Field Guide to Monkeywrenching" - this, therefore, may be the first appearance of that Abbey text. A full-page ad for said "Ecodefense" volume follows on page 27. Full-page ads for "The 1985 Earth First! Calendar" (page 29), "Earth First! Trinkets & Snake Oil" (page 30), and "T-shirts." (page 31). In den WarenkorbWith five black-and-white illustrations. The catalogue for a long-forgotten documentary exhibition which used mainly photographs and texts on panels as display materials. Compiled and curated by Ron Hunt, then librarian in the Department of Fine Art at the University of Newcastle, the exhibition was actually installed in the Physics department at Newcastle University, 1967. Hunt had joined the university library on the instigation of Richard Hamilton in 1962, and Descent into The Street was one of his first curatorial endeavours. The exhibition encompassed a wide spread of material - Constructivist design, Rodchenko, Malevich, Lissitzky, Rodchenko, Dada and Surrealist actions; recent art including such things as Warhol?s Exploding Plastic Inevitable, Yves Klein and Allan Kaprow happenings; Chinese mass callisthenics; and crucially Black Mask, the New York based militants and anti-artists. The exhibition moved to the Bristol Arts Centre the following year. Accompanying the catalogue are two rare original posters publicising the exhibition. The first of these has an appropriated image from 1922 of the conductor of Arseny Avraamov?s Symphony of Factory Sirens, where the conductor stands on the roof of the tallest house and conducts by means of flags. The male figure here is printed in green, with surrounding text in purple (poster measures 70.5 x 45 cm); the second poster appears to be an unused proof - printed in black on a yellow sheet, the poster design consists purely of text, using five quotes by Lissitzky, Tzara, Breton, Kaprow, and Black Mask (75 x 50 cm). Both posters with handling creases and wear to edges, commensurate with age, and the first with pinholes and remnants of old tape on verso. (Rare. WorldCat lists only two copies of the catalogue at The Tate and Liverpool John Moores University). Three-part folded sheet with text and illustrations printed both sides + three additional loose text leaves with typed catalogue entries. Slight foxing to covers, otherwise good.

Perhaps not as scarce as its complete absence in Worldcat (as a named item outside of a vertical file) suggests but still jolly rare. A copy donated by Hunt to the V&A's ?You Say You Want A Revolution?' show. This cataloguer has only seen a couple in his twenty or so years of familiarity with this sort of material.Ronald Hunt is an art historian and Newcastle University's former fine art librarian (shooed into positon by Richard Hamilton) who gathered together a group of young libertarian, leftist, art-students around him to produce a journal with the urine inspired title ?Icteric' (meaning ?jaundiced'). The ?Icteric Group' included the Wise brothers, the Yorkshire born stalwarts of the situ infused prankster activists called King Mob who later staged giveaways of toys liberated from Selfridge's at Christmas and plastered the LSE with obscene posters The poster part of the zine with the rubric ?New Tremors Are Running Through The Atmosphere' All We Need Is the Coureage To Face Them' often serves as the title for the many admirers of this recherché ephemeron and it was surely, albeit discreetly, very influential upon the direction of much contercultural satire. The détourned image of Brigitte Bardot, at the height ot her powers, with the speech bubble text 'Poetry will be made by all not by one' (derived from the Comte De Lautréamont) relates to the French Situ inspired ?Interview with BB' on the recto where ?she' discourses on capitalism using a mélange of Debord/Vaneigem and Frankfurt School theorist Herbert Marcuse' ideas about consumer society. It was produced in relation to, or prefiguring, Ronald Hunt and Pontus Hulten's 1969 curated show at the Moderna Museet Stockholm entitled ?Poetry Must be Made By All/Transform The World'. The Bash Street School of the title and illustrations refers to/is taken from the much loved comic strip from The Beano featuring an anarchic class of kids and a disciplinarian teacher.
