(Paper a little bit wavy). 23x15 cm * Vanda ist eine Gattung aus der Familie der Orchideen (Orchidaceae). In ihr sind etwa 82 Arten zusammengefasst. Es handelt sich um epiphytisch wachsende Pflanzen, ihr Verbreitungsgebiet liegt in…Südostasien. Einige Arten und besonders ihre Hybriden werden als Zierpflanzen und in der Schnittblumenproduktion genutzt. Die Gattung Vanda wurde 1820 von Robert Brown in Botanical Register Band 6, Tafel 506 aufgestellt. Er hatte den Namen von William Jones übernommen. Die Bezeichnung Vanda benutzte Jones schon 1795 für die in Indien vorkommende Vanda tesselata; es ist deren Trivialname in Hindi und stammt aus dem Sanskrit. Innerhalb der Familie der Orchideen zählt Vanda zur Subtribus Aeridinae. Eine erste genetische Studie mit etwa 30 Arten hauptsächlich der Gattungen Vanda, Ascocentrum und Aerides hat gezeigt, dass Vanda, Ascocentrum, Euanthe und Christensonia sehr nah miteinander verwandt sind. Vanda und Ascocentrum sind demnach nicht monophyletisch.[8] Aufgrund von neuen DNA-Analysen sind die ehemaligen Gattungen Ascocentrum, Christensonia, Euanthe, Ascocentropsis, Neofinetia, Eparmatostigma und Trudelia in die Gattung Vanda integriert worden. Nah verwandt zu Vanda sind außerdem Luisia und Papilionanthe. Innerhalb dieser Gattungen gibt es einige gut gestützte (bootstrap) Verwandtschaftsbeziehungen. Vanda luzonica, Vanda tricolor und Euanthe sanderiana formen eine Klade, wahrscheinlich gehört auch Vanda lamellata dazu. Vanda testacea ist mit Vanda liouvillei verwandt; Vanda tessellata mit Ascocentrum curvifolium; Christensonia vietnamica eventuell mit Ascocentrum garayi. Thereafter, the genus Paphiopedilum, representing the Asian tropical and subtropical slipper orchids, is discussed. The infrageneric divisions of the genus are explained and every one of the 98 species of the genus is treated in detail: basionym (the name as given in the original publication), synonym(s), discussion, etymology (origin of the name of the species), detailed description, distribution and habitat, flowering data in situ and in cultivation (as far as available), miscellaneous notes such as the mitotic chromosome count, and varieties and forms (as far as applicable). All species are illustrated whereby the great majority of pictures are photographs taken from plants in cultivation and in their natural habitat. Close-ups are available for all species, as well as in situ photographs for a great number of the taxa. Furthermore, plates from famous Botanical works have been included. After the descriptive section, there is a chapter with identification keys to the various subgenera, sections, and subsections, and finally for each of these, there is a key leading to the species. The book is completed by an index of plant names and a bibliography. Overall, the layout of the book warrants easy use. Those not interested in the purely scientific chapters can easily jump directly to the descriptive part of the work that is perfect for identification.
