Bernd Ulmann was born in 1970 in Neu-Ulm (Germany). He studied mathematics (with a minor in philosophy) at the university Mainz and finished with a diploma thesis on cryptographically secure pseudo-random number generators. He got his Ph.D. from the university Hamburg with a thesis on analog computing. He is a professor for business informatics at the FOM Hochschule für Oekonomie und Management in Frankfurt/Main (Germany).
He wrote several books on analog and hybrid computing :-), as well as some other books like an introductory book on mathematics, a book on homebrew geophysical instruments, a book on AN/FSQ-7 (the giant computer behind the SAGE system) etc.
His main interest is analog and hybrid computing with applications in high performance computing as well as low-energy applications suited for medical applications, sensor systems etc. He is an avid collector of analog and hybrid computers and runs the analog museum (http://analogmuseum.org) which features many analog computers, most of which are fully operational.
He is also interested in programming languages and developed Lang5 (http://lang5.sourceforge.net) which combines Forth and APL. He also authored several Perl modules which are available at https://metacpan.org.
