Prof. Dr. phil. habil. Thomas Gronwald, MBA, FECSS
Thomas Gronwald heads the Department of Performance, Neuroscience, Therapy and Health at the MSH Medical School Hamburg, Germany. He is an exercise and training scientist and methodologist as well as a practitioner, with a particular focus on internal and external load analysis in strength and conditioning. His work centers on load management and monitoring approaches for endurance and team sport athletes, including biomarker-based analyses and the investigation of fatigue-related processes affecting the autonomic and central nervous systems. In this context, he also studies systemdynamic approaches to organismic self-regulation, for example through non-linear heart rate variability analysis. In addition, his research addresses injury mechanisms and multimodal exercise and training strategies aimed at reducing injury risk in both team and individual sports. Thomas Gronwald has authored several books and more than 100 scientific and practice-oriented journal articles. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), holds the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification, and works with long-distance runners as well as team sport athletes. In addition, he is a fellow of the European College of Sport Science (ECSS), the world’s leading professional organization in sport science.
