Pamphlet, 7pp., cr. 8vo. Sub-title: Some facts concerning nutrition for the guidance of those engaged in administration of food relief to Famine-stricken districts. This pamphlet spreads word of the "new" knowledge about vitamins to a world in recovery from World War 1. One of the authors, Harriette Chick (see Wikipedia), helped spread the word to Vienna and Eastern Europe between 1919 and 1922. See #1988 for a collection of Harriette Chick publications.…

Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. With six b&w photographic plates. Sole edition. Oblong 8vo., stapled into the original grey paper wrapper with titles in burgundy. London, Committee Against Malnutrition, n.d. [circa February, 1937]. £1,250.00 Wrappers slightly foxed, with a minor crease on the upper portion. Rare in commerce and in big, accessible institutions with a handful of copies under three different listings with copies in the BL, the National Library of Spain. Apparently no copy in the records of the Radcliffe "Women in Science" Exhibit at The Schlesinger. A Woman Trailblazer in Science featured on stemwomen net. The beautifully composed photographs depict milk ration distribution, Basque child refugees from Irún being fed in Barcelona stadium (most likely Camp des Corts), a Catalan sanatorium receiving child refugees, a scene from a co-operative outlet, and a further group of Irúndar children attending lessons on the turf of the stadium. The pamphlet includes a brief preface by The Committee and a three-page essay on the state of food supply and health of refugees in Spain. Children in Spain was produced by an apolitical relief group, members of which included the veteran suffragist Corbett Ashby. And the famed microbiologist Dame Harriette Chick who was the first female Jenner Fellow at the Lister institute and as the discoverer of Chick's Law. Her name is given to the Chick-Watson Equation as applied in a test for the effectiveness of disinfectants. She is also noted for a monumental discovery in helping to prove that vitamins in cod liver oil and exposure to UV light could prevent and cure childhood rickets. She was an ideal person to be involved in child welfare at a time of great chaos in Spain - added to which in the Great War period she was involved in balancing nutritional deficiencies in wartime diets at home and abroad. 217806.…
