Jan Middendorp

Born in the Netherlands, Jan Middendorp spent much of his early professional life in Belgium, and has lived in Berlin, Germany, since 2005. In the 1980s he was a critic of the arts, covering theatre, dance, video and media art. He later specialized in graphic design and typography, writing acclaimed books such as Dutch Type, Made with FontFont (with Erik Spiekermann), Hand to Type, Shaping Text, and more. He has been a long-time collaborator to design magazines such as Eye, Typo, Items and others. He worked as an editor and consultant for various typographic companies, including FontShop, LucasFonts and Linotype. For 9 years he was a writer and consultant to MyFonts, where he edited the popular interview newsletter Creative Characters. Jan co-curated exhibitions held in Dubai, London, The Hague, Berlin, New York, Beijing, Shanghai, and elsewhere, He recently worked as a book designer and typesetter for Repeater Books in London, founded the informal type company Fust & Friends in Berlin and spent most of 2018 on producing the long-awaited reprint of his Dutch Type.
