On 17 December 1845 the garrison of Victoria Settlement, Port Essington, (now in the NT) were astonsihed by the arrival on horseback of German explorer Ludwig Leichhardt and his party. They had taken 14 months to travel from the Darling Downs in Queensland to this remote outpost - some 3000 miles - and were considered lost.
